CHRISTOPHER SAMUELS/PARK RECORD A gas leak near the intersection of Kearns Boulevard and Cooke Drive Wednesday afternoon forced an evacuation of the immediate area and the closure of Kearns Boulevard in both directions, emergency officials said. The Park City Fire District tweeted that officials reopened the road around 5:30 p.m. after the leak was fixed, though about 30 people could not return to their homes or places of work until a short time later. Phil Kirk, a captain with the Park City Police Department, said responders were notified about the gas leak at approximately 3:18 p.m. He said crews constructing a tunnel underneath Kearns Boulevard near Park City High School hit an unmarked gas line. Traffic from Kearns Boulevard was diverted onto Wyatt Earp Way and Sidewinder Drive, Kirk said. There were no reported injuries, Kirk said. Sign up now at bit.ly/prrecordroundup A skateboarder hit a young boy on a human-powered scooter at the skate park at City Park on Pioneer Day, the Park City Police Department said, a collision that was not serious but one that highlights safety issues at the popular facility. The case was reported at 7:44 p.m. on July 24. Phil Kirk, a police captain, said the department did not have details about the collision. He said the boy who was riding the scooter was still at the skate park when officers arrived. Kirk said the boy, who is approximately 4, was not injured. The skateboarder, be- lieved to be 13 or 14, was no longer there when the officers arrived, though. Kirk said the police were told the “parents got heated.” The parents were also gone by the time the police arrived. The skateboarder “started arguing with the parents about watching their kid better because he was in a bad spot which apparently is a blind spot when you exit the north side skating bowl. They all verbally argued back and forth for a short time before all the parties left the area prior to my arrival and were not identified or located,” according to Police Department notes from the incident. The Police Department three days later, at 1:14 p.m. on July 27, received a complaint of scooters in the skate park. Public police logs did not provide details. The skate park prohibits bicycle riders, people on hu- man-powered scooters and motorized scooters. The authorities occasionally receive reports of people breaking the rules at the skate park with scooter riders and bicyclists sometimes seen. There is a concern about the heightened risk of collisions and injuries with scooter riders and bicyclists sharing the park with skateboarders and inline skaters. A sign at the skate park advertising the prohibition of bicycles points bicyclists to the dirt jump park on Holiday Ranch Loop Road. The sign also says the skate park is designed for skateboarders and people using inline skates. The Police Department, meanwhile, on July 25 received a report of two skateboarders obstructing traffic on Sullivan Road, a small street that borders City Park and is close to the skate park. The police said the two were warned. |
