As a translator, transla-tor, Bloch has worked on the Yiddish writings of LB. Singer, Jacob Glatstein and Abraham Sutzkever. She has also collaborated collaborat-ed on the translations of two Israeli poets, Dahlia Ravikovitch and Yehuda Amichai, as well as a translation trans-lation of the biblical Song of Songs. Mrs. Dumpty, Bloch's most recent book of poems, is a memoir about the fall of a long and loving marriage. mar-riage. Her poems speak of the familiar strains in a marriage of many years aging, dependency and the erosion of feeling. Bloch writes not only about horrors like electroshock therapy but also about the after-shocks of history, such as the trauma of Hitler's Germany. Bloch's awards include two fellowships fel-lowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, one in poetry and one in translation; a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship, and the Book of the Year Award of the Conference on Christianity and Literature. She lives in Berkeley, Calif., where she is W.M. Keck Professor of English and director of the Creative Writing Program at Mills College. She teaches courses in poetry, Shakespeare, and the Bible.
