Make physical fitness part of family routine If your family enjoys vigorous, outdoor activity activ-ity during the summer, why not make physical fiiness a year-round goal? Sure, it's easier this time of year, but there's no reason to slow down as the kids head back to school and you start spending more time inside. The American Heart Association has some tips to help you make physical fitness a family routine. It's important because physical inactivity inactivi-ty is one ol the risk factors for heart disease and stroke that you can control. Even modest levels of physical activity are beneficial because exercise exer-cise can help control high blood pressure, diabetes dia-betes and obesity. Help your children develop good physical activity habits at an early age by setting a good example yourself Limit the amount of television, televi-sion, movies, videos and computer activities to Ie-s than two hours a day. Fill the rest of your family's leisure time with physical activity. Plan family outings that involve ihings like hiking, bicyciing. skiing and swimming. Again, set that good example by getting out of the car and walking or bicycling whenever you can. Use stairs instead of elevators and escalators. As part of the family routine, assign your children chil-dren some household chores that require physical physi-cal exertion, keeping in mind their strength, coordination and maturity. Mowing lawns, raking rak-ing leaves, scrubbing floors and taking out the garbage not only teaches responsibility but can be good exercise. Discourage doing homework immediately after school to allow children some diversion from the structure of the school day. Children should be active after school and before dinner. Observe which sports and activities appeal to your children and then find out about lessons, ieagues and clubs. Some children thrive on team sports: others prefer indiv idual activities. Some activities like tennis and swimming can be enjoyed for a lifetime and are much easier to learn during childhood. And when children complain about being bored, suggest something that gets them moving. Be an advocate for physical education at schmil. Encourage your local school board to put emphasis on skills students can use for the rest of their lives. Volunteer to assist since school budget shortfalls often impact physical education. te sure your cnnu s scnooi is participating partici-pating in the Amercan Heart Association's "Jump Rope for Heart" program that incorporates incorpo-rates jump rope endurance and skill into the p.e. curriculum. Join your kids in taking advantage of your community's recreation opportunities from team sports to tennis courts and fun runs and walking events like the American Heart Walk, which will be held in Salt Lake City on Sept. 20 at Sugarhoue Paik. Encourage a child's physical activity with fitness-oriented gilts a jump rope, mini-trsmpo-line. tennis racket, baseball glove or youth membership at the local gym. Sign them up for lessons and camps to learn more about their special fiiness or sports interest. By encouraging an active lifestyle you'll be ensuring a healthier life for your children. Check the American Heart Association website web-site at v. ww.heartsource.org for more ideas on how to steer youi youngsters in the right direction. direc-tion.
