Nacho Mama's wins the Wednesday Night Coed League playoffs with a perfect, 3-0 record. Game 2 of the finals was suspended due to rain before the fifth inning with Burgie's leading. The situation is currently under protest. Olch handicaps the competing bids continued from C1 competition. The other North American bid is from Quebec City, which has had problems finding an International Ski Federation-approved Federation-approved venue for a downhill. That trouble led Olch to term Quebec "not as strong as people thought." Ostersund, Sweden, like Utah, has a long history of bidding for the Olympics. It's location just a few hours as the crow flies from Lillehammer, Norway has been cited as a potential weakness, but Olch sees it differently. "Yes, it's close to Lillehammer, but Lillehammer was the best Games ever." He called Ostersund "a sentimental favorite" and said, "They run a very good bid." Sion, Switzerland was called "the strongest competitor" by Olch. Its location in the home of winter sports is a strong point, as ' is the fact that it will have been 54 years since the last Games were held in Switzerland. Jaca, Spain, located in the Pyrenees, presented some interesting attributes to its bid. The Games, would be a multinational multi-national effort, held in conjunction with Andorra and even extending some cross country trails into France. Olch termed the Jaca effort, "a good, solid bid." Graz, Austria, with the support of that country's national organizing committee, is also bidding for the 2002 Games. Olch called their bid "a little premature. It's mostly a learning experience for them." Two other bids were considered longshots by Olch. Slovenia has a multi-national bid like Jaca, with planning taking place in southern Austria (though the Austrian NOC supports the Graz bid) and northern Italy as well. And Slovakia, formerly part of Czechoslovakia, has hosted World Cup skiing events, but is probably not ready for something as big as the Olympics. Finally, a bid from a city located on the Black Sea, was given no chance by Mayor Olch. The nine cities will be pared to four on the basis of the technical merits of the bids in the third week of January. The IOC will select one city from the 'Final Four' on June 16, 1995. School's in session... Drive carefully. Trail riders set fast pace in Uintahs continued from C3 water truck which, as it turned out, was not needed. The day was cloudy and drizzly, which kept horses and riders cool and moving quickly. Finish times for the 55-miler were a full hour faster than last year. All 32 horses entered in the 55-mile ride were able to finish, while only two of the 29 horses competing in the 30-mile race were unable to complete the course. The course was a combination of single-track trail and mountain jeep roads, both with plenty of elevation change. Next year's Uinta Challenge is already scheduled for Aug. 26. First-time First-time endurance riders and those interested in helping out or just spectating are welcome. For more information on the Uinta Challenge or endurance riding, contact ride managers Dana Landale and Ken (Nipper) Noble at 783-5788. Below are listed the top five finishers, with the horses, in each ride: 30-Mile Race 1st LeGrande Woolstenhulme Aristocrat 2nd Bob Taylor Raider 3rd Larry Maynard Omner 4th Jessie Whitmore AA Valentina 5th Louise Scott Matisse 55-Mile Race 1st Laurel Sander Sneakers 2nd Wendy Wagner HCC Royal Duke (Jimmy) 3rd Christoph Schork Mr. Triumph 4th Rick Brand Aesir 5th Cindi Busby Seytez Rainbo (Shawnee) The Park Record B Section C Miner cheerleaders are athletes the whole year continued from C3 season, in which they will practice three to four days a week for three hours at a time. Summer is also the time when the team attends a camp, usually held at an area university. Camps are not only an opportunity to work and learn, they're also a competitive event. Cheerleading squads from throughout the Intermountain region, all competing in one field and not separated according to school size, each create a 30-second cheer that is judged and compared to the competition. The winning, team moves on to national competition. This past summer the camp was held at the University of Utah and attracted more than 200 cheerleaders from the area. While the Park City team did not qualify for the nationals, senior Bambi Rino. was selected for the National Cheerleaders Association AIl-Amcrican Team. At Park City, the team that's not playing a "sport" despite having to deal with all of the rules pertaining to eligibility, travel and academics, has a special fundraiser planned for this autumn. The Fertilize the Field Fundraiser will divide Dozier" Field into one-by-one yard squares that will be "sold" at every home football game to supporters for $1. During the week prior to the final home game (Friday Oct. 14 against Union) a horse will choose and "fertilize" a spot on the field. Whoever has the rights to that section of turf will split the money raised by the cheerleaders 50-50. Cheerleading used to be a case of a skirt and looking good. But according to Coach Payne," "That's not our philosophy at Park City." For the Miners, it's a sport and they approach it as athletes. Miners shutout Lehi, 2-0 continued from C1 just made sure we had their forwards marked," said coach Gary Blanton afterwards. He was especially happy with the continued aggressive play of Johnson in goal. "She had to come out a few times and take away breakaways," which, he said, serves to pump up the rest of the Miners. "It's great to have someone like that. You need to have a goalkeeper like that." As for the goal scoring of Knudsen, Blanton invoked his favorite line of praise: "She really turned it on today.
