A dissertation on development The following is a reprint from The Kendig Report, published in the Jackson Hole News on March 4, 1992. Nora Seltenrich is the planning director for Park City, Utah. Park City, another town in the throes of planning, is in some ways a step behind the planning process here. Their situation is very similar, however, right down to the fact that the city may hire consultant Lane Kendig. As in Jackson and Teton County, planners in Park City are trying to be proactive. "The problem," said planning director Nora Seltenrich, "is that people feel they have the right to do whatever they want with their property indefinitely. Unfortunately, Unfortun-ately, we may have to wait until DO YOUR PART. DRIVE SMART. For Park City, again much like Jackson, the change may entail a lowering of expectations from development. Clustering and decreasing base densities are among early suggestions to preserve community character there. Park City's "plan" has not yet been formalized, but Seltenrich expects it will face legal challenge when it is completed. "Where you draw the line on development is tricky," Seltenrich said, "but you must realize you're never going to please everybody. There is no end-all solution- that just seems to be the nature of the beast these days." Park City ski benefit to promote domestic peace The first-annual Family Ski Benefit will take place on April 4 at Park City Ski Area. Saturday's events will include games, door prizes, Nastar racing, a spaghetti feast and scavenger hunt as well as awards in some of the individual categories for a $25 adult donation or $20 donation for children 12 or younger. All participants get a Park City lift ticket for their donation. Season Pass Holders can join in the fun for a mere $10 donation. Participants are also eligible for a $5 ski rental at the Park City Resort Gart Brothers. Interested individuals must purchase their ticketdonation by March 30 from the Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 3342, Park City, UT 84060. The second annual Snowshine Festival, a celebration of spring skiing, will take place March 21 through April 4, 1992 at Park City Ski Area. The Snowshine Festival is aimed at encouraging more skiers to take advantage of spring skiing in Park City. "Our snowpack from natural snow and snowmaking, combined with warm, sunny days makes spring the most enjoyable time of year to ski," says Robbie Beck-McHugh, Beck-McHugh, Park City Ski Area marketing director. "Park City's spring skiing advantage is that our mountain offers terrain facing in nearly every direction so you can find runs throughout the day with ideal sun exposure where the snow is just right," she adds. "For years we've been telling people that the arrival of spring in Park City doesn't mean ski season is over, it means it's just warming up. In fact, last year we received 93 inches of snow in March. The Snowshine Festival is our way of getting more people to take advantage of our great March and April skiing," Beck-McHugh concludes. For more information on the Snowshine Festival contact the Park City Ski Area at (801)649-8111.
