"When critical minutes count, there are "lifesaving benefits to having quick access to an AED. They are one of the key links' in the chain of survival as identified by the American Heart Association." Since the program began in 2003. there have been 18 documented cardiac arrest cases for which AEDs made available through the grant program have been used. The most recent happened this past January when quick access to one of the AEDs saved an individual's life. Roosevelt declared March 1943 to be "Red Cross Month" and every year since, each president has issued a similar proclamation. "Qwest is committed to making a positive difference in the communities where customers live and work, and we-are proud of our relationship with the American Red Cross," said Ric Padilla, vice president of corporate social responsibility for Qwest. "What better time to remind our communities of Qwest's support of the vital work of the Red Cross than in March - Red Cross Month." Red Cross disaster volunteer training is funded, in part, by a generous grant from Qwest. The $275,000 grant covers, "Introduction To Disaster Training," for all Red Cross vol- unteers in Qwest's 14-state service area. That contribution was made through the Qwest Foundation, Qwest fs philanthropic arm;. _ :.;: ." "Qwest truly delivers on their Spirit of Service," said Mariann Geyer, CEO of the GSLAC of the American Red Cross. "With their help, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, The Greater Salt Lake Area Chapter and Red Cross chapters throughout Qwest's 14-state region were able to recruit and train countless new disaster volunteers." The Qwest Foundation's core principle is that investing in people and communities provides lasting value for the future. The Qwest Foundation awards grants to community-based programs that generate high-impact and measurable results, focusing on K-12 education and economic development. The Qwest Foundation's philosophy is to help build strong communities through investing in people and the places where they live and work.
