Show Saturday, August 1, 1998 The Park Record A-13 From Time to Time The Record... back at home, still in business Compiled by Kat James OF THE RECORD STAFF 1 00 Years Ago In the wake of the fire This issue of The Record is printed print-ed at home the first time since the fire and while we are very late in going to press, owing to the fact that much of our material is not yet here, we are glad to be able to once more do our own work. For five solid weeks the Salt Lake Herald Her-ald has printed the paper and never once has a suspicion of protest emanated from anyone in that establishment at the inconvenience we have put them to during the past five weeks. The Herald's assistance to us during the time stated cannot be measured in dollars and cents, but if gratitude can pay the debt, we hope partially to pay them all, from manager to "devil," some time. A bridge that's been burned : We understand a petition will be. presented to the City Council next Wednesday to have a bridge, similar simi-lar to the one recently destroyed by fire, commonly known as China Bridge, built for the convenience of those who live and own property on Rossie Hill. . We hope the council will grant the request, for by doing so, it will encourage the rebuilding of many homes that were destroyed on that side, besides being a great convenience conve-nience to those fortunate enough to have their homes spared them. In our opinion the bridge should be rebuilt. Arrested for fornication Hyrum J. Dennis, of Midway, better known as Hyrum J. Horner, was arrested last Thursday by Deputy Sheriff Thomas Cupit, on a charge of fornication, the complaint being sworn to by George Daniels. . The woman in the case is Miss Hannah Han-nah Daniels, who a year ago last February gave birth to a child, and Dennis was charged with being its father. The young man made himself him-self scarce, and it was not until last Wednesday that Mr. Daniels, the father of the girl, saw him on the street, and immediately swore to a complaint. The warrant was given to Deputy Sheriff Cupit, who, after a diligent search, found the culprit in fhay field near Snyderville. He was - brought to Park City and taken before Justice Lockhart, who admitted him to bail in the sum of $200 until next Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, when the case will be investigated. Levi Snyder and H.J. Dennis Sr. are the bondsmen. 50 Years Ago A 'dickle' cup of coffee Edward Walsh Mehren is going to Washington with an idea he says will save the public $5 billion a year. The billions of dollars in savings estimated comes from Mehren's figures fig-ures showing Americans drank 25 billion cups of nickel coffee in 1939. Today that coffee ranges up in price to a dime. Drinking nickel coffee would save $625 million a year, he says. It is the same with other things. He wants a dickle or maybe a jime. That is, he wants the United States to make coins worth 2 12 cents, 7 12 cents and 12 12 cents. His friends suggested the coin halfway between a dime and a nickel nick-el be called a "dickle" or "jime" for jitney and dime. That would make the 2 12 cent piece a "pickle" for penny and nickel, or "jenny" for jitney jit-ney and penny. The' 12 12 cent coin of course would be a "bit," two bits being a quarter. For nearly a year Mehren has been on his crusade for fractional coinage. Now the Beverly Hills, Calif., soft drink manufacturer is heading directly for President Truman., Tru-man., Mehren argues this way: American has only four coins worth a quarter or less. But Britain has six, and the Netherlands and Sweden each have seven coins worth a quarter or less. With the addition of three new coins, the U.S. would have seven, too. "They would be used for soft drinks, sales taxes, telephones, street car and bus tokens, magazines, maga-zines, newspaper and all other commodities com-modities and services that are too cheap at five cents and too expensive expen-sive at 10 cents," says Mehren. "Everybody is for it," he said. "I've got hundreds of letters from all over the country. This is a thing America needs. The people want it. And I'm going to get a plank in both the Democratic and Republican Republi-can platforms at Philadelphia calling call-ing for this currency reform. "It will take a lot of silver. West- -ern senators would not oppose that But then I also propose to abolish the silver dollar and half dollar. Nobody ever uses them anymore." Brother, can you spare a jime? 25 Years Ago Resort states position on facilities (in legalese) In order to assure the fullest possible pos-sible enjoyment of its recreational facilities, it is the firm intention of Greater Park City Company that they shall not become over-crowded. OSHA official Don Anderson said the agency may file charges against the film company for violating violat-ing rules regarding the preparation, handling and use of the explosive charges. Grant Richins died at LDS Hospital Hos-pital the day after the accident, which occurred about 1 p.m. in the Crandall gravel pit, where the charges accidentally detonated during dur-ing filming. The film company has most recently been working in the Swede Alley area of Park City. Police Chief Frank Bell said the company had applied for permission to conduct con-duct special effects scenes in the city when the accident occurred, and has since that time retracted its request. Bell said the company has met all other requirements for filming. film-ing. Bell said the police department has received some "minor complaints" com-plaints" from area residents who have been inconvenienced during the filming, but said there have been no major problems. Some county employees have also said they've been inconvenienced inconve-nienced by the filming, which has taken place at the courthouse and Dean's Cafe in Coalville. Said one employee, "We're the victims here. I'm very unimpressed with the control con-trol of the situation." Regarding the investigation of the accident, OSHA's Anderson said the employees of the company "are being very closed mouthed about what went on and what happened." hap-pened." He said the investigation should be completed in two weeks. The victim is survived by a wife, two sons and a daughter.
