Show Page A8 Thursday, July 6, 1989 Park Record Students see Snowbird stars You can never get quite close enough to rub elbows with stars, but students in Park City Intstitute's astronomy and space simulation classes came as close as they could on an astronomical field trip to the top of Snowbird. On last weekend's trip, Brighton High School teacher John Barainca took twenty-four students up the tram to spend the night watching stars from the summit of Snowbird. The ski area doesn't usually allow tram riders to stay the night, and Barainca's classes are the only exception. ex-ception. About three times a year, he brings a group up to the peak, where atmospheric obstructions are at a minimum. As the sun sets over Salt Lake City, Ci-ty, Barainca begins his all-night instructional in-structional session. The first visible celestial object to appear is venus. The bright planet is completely visible visi-ble to the naked eye, so Barancia doesn't focus his 2000 millimeter telescope on it. Instead, he waits a while longer, as stars begin appearing out of the light sky. The first thing he trains the telescope on turns out to be familiar the ringed globe is unmistakably un-mistakably Saturn. As students take turns peering through the scope at the tiny orb in the lens, Barainca puts up a more magnified image on a slide-screen to enhi.r.ve the students' understanding of what they are seeing. Once he's grabbed everyone's attention at-tention with the bizzare sight of Saturn, he turns to more esoteric astronomy. Soon students are gazing at twin stars which rotate around one another; at a star cluster; at a nebula; or at a particularly bright and beautiful star. Students come and go to Barainca's telescope all night. He keeps awake, following various sights as they appear over the horizon, and he wakes up dozing students to give them a view. Batty joins Marine corps Park City High School graduate Paul Batty has joined the Marine Corps Reserves, and he will leave July 10 for the Marine Recruit Depot in San Diego. Nemcik was chose as one of only 24 students throughout the state to attend the intensive enrichment program pro-gram ; she was chosen on the basis of test scores and grade point average. xry J -11 Amy Nemcik Local attends Girl's state Park City High School student Jenny Simmons got a first-hand experience ex-perience with state government as a participant in Girl's State last month. The event is sponsored by American Legion. It is a mock set-up of state government, and it allows students to participate in the governmental govern-mental process. Simmons was elected a Utah Supreme Court Justice for the week-long experience. S f s By morning, as the nearly new crescent moon comes up just before sunrise, Barainca is dressed in a warm pair of coveralls, getting ready to break down his complicated telescope, which actually follows stars across the sky by means of a motor-drive. The students are all asleep, but Barainca is looking complacently drained, having spent the night reaffirming reaf-firming that the heavens are still in place. photos by Ron Georg . lr ill -- iJBMfc r SNOWED J A cy - f t- J , Vs J Above: Tcjacher John Barainca su rveys the sky for appropr iate celestial sights,.
