I i ftp 7fl 5 OUT A nV by RONGEORG Record staff writer If you've never believed truth is stranger than fiction, you've never seen some of the films the United States Film Festival has gathered for past documentary competitions. The 1989 film festival promises to be no different as organizers have collected information on topics from comic book fetishists to motel lifestyles into films which demonstrate life is at least as interesting in-teresting as fiction, if not stranger. At the top of the interest list for many people, with at least one screening already sold out, is "Coverup: Behind the Iran Contra Affair." While the film didn't prevent the American public from electing George Bush president, it has been playing to growing audiences since its release in June. Originally released for retail on the video market, it has gained widespread theatrical acceptance. It has also garnered substantial critical acclaim, pulling in great reviews from The Denver Post, the L.A. Times, the Chicago Tribune, the Village Voice, and hordes of others noteworthy journals. The case it purports to make is a signifigant one. According to interviews inter-views assembled by producer Barbara Bar-bara Trent, agents of the United States Government traded arms and money for hostages, among other crimes, and George Bush knew, at least peripherially, what was going on. Most reviewers have acknowledged acknowledg-ed the film has a decidedly left bent, which may explain why it never became campaign fuel in an election where one of the catch phrases was, "Where was George?" In sharp contrast to the Iran Contra Con-tra scandal, another documentary which should attract a following is "Isadora Duncan: Movement from the Soul." To modern dancers, Isadora Duncan Dun-can is their first ancestor. She started it all. To modern thinkers, Duncan is the embodiment of enlightened thought. She was born in 1877, and around the turn of the century, when people were thinking piano legs obscene, Duncan was dancing bare-legged and barefoot. Her dances were a radical departure from classical ballet; they were an unbridled celebration of life. Duncan also lived an unbridled life. She flaunted her string of rich and intellecual lovers, and she died in 1927 when a long scarf she was wearing was caught in the wheel of a Bugatti sports car. That part of her life has been highlighted in other films; this documentary will look at her dance. Using professional modern dancers to demonstrate Duncan's theory and technique, the film will use some autobiographical devices left behind by Duncan to recreate her work. "Heavy Petting" is a film which is bound to attract some attention. It is about just what the title says. No, this is not a porno-documentary. porno-documentary. It is a look at mores, attitudes, and taboos about sex as seen through cinema, television, and public service announcements coupled with interviews from people who've been through it. The exploration is an innocent one; the film is looking at people in the early to late stages of sexual ex-perimentation. ex-perimentation. It follows adolescents through the tortured periods of worry and anxiety with testimony from people such as Allen Ginsburg, David Byrne, William Burroughs, Sandra Bernhard, Abbie Hoffman, and quite a few others. Ultimately, all of the featured interviewees in-terviewees make it through the tt avails, as we all do. What makes us laugh? The documentary "Funny" is bound to make us laugh and it may answer the question as well. The film is just a series of jokes. They are sometimes told by celebreties, Frank Zappa gets one in, but most are just common folks telling their favorite jokes. It may sound like a shriner's convention, con-vention, but this documentary might actually be quite an anthropological study. By taking a slice of society, consisting of about one hundred people, peo-ple, and hearing exactly what it is they find funny, one should be able to draw some interesting conclusions. There are 10 other documentaries in the competition at the film festival, including a film about the dark life of jazz trumpeteer Chet Baker; another about the Apollo program pro-gram ; and another about filmmaker John Huston. The documentaries will be judged by a panel consisting of Karen Cooper, Jean-Pierre Gorin, Elliot Caplan, Nick Hart Williams, and Dennis O'Rourke. For more information about the documentary competition, consult the film festival guide, available at the film festival office at the Treasure Mountain Inn on Main Street. George Bush has denied he had any role in the arms for hostages scandal during dur-ing the Reagan administration. ad-ministration. The documentary "Coverup" suggests otherwise. 111 "IL"""' "' 1 11 "' 1 mi'" ' mmm r -.' ' '?ZCtC J : L' , f J , If : h : f l ' - ' '" ( , - , . , , , ' . - ' - ; . - i A - w w U Horn S1 ' 'S.
