Please see Muckers, B-6 9 a.m.- Noon Local ski star using recovery time wisely By PAUL ROBBINS Special to the Record Park City's guitar-playing downhiller, Bryon Friedman, headed back to the Left Coast this week after a relaxing time at home with family and friends. After more surgery on his right leg, he may not have the shrill ex-girlfriend, pickup truck and a dog that country&wcstern songs often require, but if he wanted, "Freedog" could pen his own tale of woe. But that's not his style. Friedman, who turned 25 last month, prefers to look on the positive side of things. He realizes how good life can be, even if you're recuperating from a broken leg and assorted other injuries, even if you're coming off an unexpected surgery, and even if you're facing the prospect of watching the Olympics on TV instead of from a start shack or a finish line. "The surgery is Bad News - it sucks starling over from ground zero with new screws and a new rod in your leg," he said over the holiday. "But the Good News is this is a new beginning, and it should be a good one...finally. "The French really messed up in solace as leg heals January. They put in too long a rod." To backtrack, Friedman - having completed the 2004 season with his first two U.S. championships and his first World Cup top-10 finish - was ripping through the first few weeks of his best season of World Cup racing Jan. 5 when he crashed in downhill training in Chamonix, France. He broke his right leg in a so-called tib-fib (lower-leg) fracture and also broke his left hand. He was operated on in a French hospital before returning home; a steel rod was inserted in the leg to stabilize everything. "The rod they just replaced was causing a lot of problem," he explained. It was basically making my life miserable; I couldn't bend my knee.m couldn't straighten it all the way. It hurt in different ways depending on whether \ was walking or moving it...and I told Dr. [Vernonj Cooley, 'I may look good on the X-ray, but I'm in a lot of pain. I feel awful.'" Cooley referred Friedman to another surgeon, who removed the old rod. "So, this is another beginning and I'm optimistic about it. I'm stretching and icing it and in another week or so. Til start pushing a little harder, get the stitches out and go from there. I'll go back to Santa Barbara for the summer. I've found a great therapist who's helping a lot."
