Show dPMitifflairfies Helen McDevitt J Helen McDevitt, 55, a Sister of Charity of Leavenworth, died June 8 in a Denver hospital after a short illness. She was born in Butte, Montana Dec. 13, 1929 to Owen and Mary Ellen Haran McDevitt. Her four sisters all married Park City residents. She attended St. Mary School and was a graduate of Girls' Central High School in 1948, when she entered the religious community of Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth. She was known as Sister Mary Owenita until August 1968, when she returned to her baptismal name. She taught 15 years in parochial schools in Leadville and Denver, Colorado, Lawrence and Leavenworth, Kansas, Independence and Kansas City, Missouri and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She was one of the first Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth to offer formal classroom teaching for full-time religious education and pastoral ministry, which she began in 1956. She was involved in religious education in Butte and Helena, Montana and served in many areas of the church. She returned to parish ministry at the Guardian Angel parish in Denver, where she remained until her death. Her sister Mary, who was the wife of Elden Thompson (stepbrother of Ken Kummer) of Park City, preceded her in death. Her sister Kate married Voyde Gordon, her sister Pat married Bill Richardson and her sister Nora married Gene Webber, all of Park City. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Jim and John. She was buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Butte, Montana. , '. Elizabeth flora (Beth). Lam per ' "ElizabeU F16 ---r She was born in Park City on Aug. .18, 1911, the first child of Leland Stanford and Maude Nell McPhee. She married Chick Lamper on April 28, 1928. He died on June 19, 1973. i, Beth was a former championship bowler. She loved flowers, warm weather, sunsets and handwork. ' She is survived by sons Gene and Swede, their wives Carole and Sandra, sister Margaret Lamper, 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, all of Salt Lake; and niece Audrey Stevens, of Heber City. A son, Lee (Scotty ) died in May 1979. Graveside services were held Monday afternoon at Sunset Gardens of the Valley Cemetery in Salt Lake ( 10600 South 1700 East ) . William Edwards Bates William Edward Bates died on June 7 in Salt Lake. He was 56. He was born on Aug. 31, 1928 in Park City to William Edward Sr. and Mary Lacey Yates Bates. He married Beverly Opal Ryan on Aug. 18, 1950 in Midway. The union was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Bates worked as a glazer for Linford Brothers Glass Co. He was an active member of the LDS Church, holding many positions. He loved the outdoors and was a Cub Master Scoutmaster. He is survived by his wife (of Salt Lake) ; sons and daughters-in-laws, Gene and Carolyn Bates (West Jordan), Ron and Patty Bates (South Jordan), Mike and Cindy Bates (Kearns), Curtis and Kristine Bates (Kearns), and Dave Bates (Salt Lake); brother Keith Bates (West Valley); sister Marilyn Ivie (Orem); and 13 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Lee. Funeral services were held June 11 at Redwood Memorial Estates (6500 South Redwood Road). Burial was in the Midway Cemetery. |
