V Hodgson Carrie V. V Hodgson 92 a pioneer business woman of Park City died of natural causes on August 24 1968 in a Salt Lake hospital She was born on October 21 1875 in Momence Ill to Frederick C C. C and Jennie Jennie Jennie Jen Jen- nie Van Her marriage to Charles W W. W Hodgson Hodgson Hodg Hodg- son in 1900 in Hastings Nebraska Nebraska Nebraska Neb Neb- later ended in divorce Mrs Car Carrie r i e Vivian Van Hodgson came to Park City on May 17 1904 and had been a resident here ever since and for the greater period of the time at her present home and business add address res s. s Main Street Many Man y friends in Park City former and out- out state of-state friends and family have always enjoyed her gracious cordiality when they visited with Mrs Hodgson She had always taken a personal interest in all of her many friends She was engaged in the re retail retail retail re- re tail jewelry business her entire time in Park City The first site was in the Adams Adam's Studio which was located between Pop Jenks and the old Park Record office w where her e she stayed about one month In 1904 she located in the Maple Hall Building until she later bought the present site of the jewelry store from L. L E. E Hubbard and continued in inthe inthe inthe the same location doing business business business busi busi- ness with Park City residents resi and f folks 0 1 k s from surrounding areas Because of a well mark land-mark of the large clock suspended from a long longpole longpole longpole pole which was as high as the story second-story porch the west corner of Fourth and Main Street et was known as The Clock Corner Until the last four years Mrs Hodgson was behind the counter at the Jewelry store for many years and was a familiar and friendly sight at the watchmakers watchmaker's watchmakers watchmaker's watchmakers watchmaker's watch watch- makers maker's repair bench In the corner of the large north window of the store Many Park City families have baby rings which she gave at their births Mrs C. C V. V Hodgson was a belo beloved ed friend to many Opposite and on the south wall of the store hung a very old and valuable walnut carved clock placed there by E. E L. L Hubbard and it was one of Mrs Hodgson's Hodgson's Hodgson's Hodg Hodg- sons son's prized possessions In the great fire of 1889 Mr Hubbard carried this wonderful clock up on the hi hillside 11 sid e and saved it and it is still hanging on the south wall to be admired by the many who pass the window Mrs Hodgson was the official Union Pacific time-keeper time for many years and was the official weatherman for the Park City area until she became inactive after her eye surgery She missed missed missed mis mis- sed the commerce com merce of the jewelry business and had hoped to re resume resume resume re- re sume her place at the north window again Her slow re recovery recovery recovery re- re covery from the surgery and the recent illnesses prevented her from this hope She was always a lover of horses and at one time had three beautiful pin pinto t 0 horses She raised two of them herself and bought the first pinto from awell a awell awell well known Park Par k City man Paddy Heenan The barn was located on Swede Alley Mrs Hodgson enjoyed spending time around the Park City area riding j ne of her fine horses Whenever she was able she loved to travel and has visited visited visited visit visit- ed 16 different countries and the Hawaiian Islands as well as touring the United States Mrs Hodgson was a charter member of the Pythian Sisters and held all the offices of the lodge She always alway s supported civic and religious efforts in her adopted city She was a member of the Episcopal Church She is survived by a nephew Walter J. J Van of Denver Denver Denver Den Den- ver Colorado a cousin Raymond Raymond Raymond Ray Ray- mond Coombe of Oak Park Ill and her devoted friend and companion companion companion com com- panion Mary Dougherty Funeral services were held at the Park City alpin Mortuary Mortuary Mortuary Mort Mort- uary burial was at the Park City Cemetery on Tuesday August 27 2 1968 |
