Show john carpenter P dies another old veteran and one time adner has answered the roll call up sender onder this time it Is john carpenter one ol of park cites oldest inhabitants and a familar figure on our streets tor for many years past he was vas sick but a day or two death claiming him last tuesday at the home of his son frank he was laid to rest thursday afternoon services being held at the family residence bishop W D lewis officiating the G A R services were also held over the remains lead by A fuelling ond assisted by the three others aich which now constitutes the local past there were may floral remembrances be speaking the esteem in which hah the old gentleman was held the pall bearers were the G A R members A fuelling charles brockaway Bock away joseph gunther and john sykes with barney riley and joseph fares he was burled buried by the side of his wife who died in this city twenty one years ago the following was handed the record by J P bums an old friend of the deceased under the heading of remembrances of 0 john parsons carpenter corn born at wells Summerset shire england december 1828 worked in the coal mines until coming to america he arriving in new york on april 28 1852 and going to quebec caama where he be remained tor for nearly a year he resided in virginia north carolina and new orleans finally locating in All neville essex county new york there he worked in the iron mines tor for eighteen years he was considered a very practical man inan and had charge ot of the loading tiring firing the holes boles and blasting it was while at hinesville MInes ville he met the late john bidge micheal hennessey and patrick tallon all of 0 whom were identified with mining in park city in later years john parsons as he was waa then known enlisted in the anted states army from rom vermont and also from N Y at this time joining the N Y infantry volunteers ile he served through the civil sar ar receiving an in honorable discharge at washington D C at the close c losa ot of the war in 1865 he returned to and was presented with a suit of clothes from a lawyer named tobie who had employed jack to serve as it a substitute in the army jack saw service under general burnsides captain Kedd lemark at fort steadman coal harbor and popular grove at the latter place lie ha with other comrades were taken from the battlefield badly wounded john parsons carpenter was married in england in 1816 1846 when eighteen years of age there were two children ildren cli born of this union one ton son john ls is still living in england the other child and mother dying before he be left england he was married again in N I 1 in 1872 to miss aliss addle golden a school teacher eight children were nere born from this union three of 1 hour are still living prank frank mrs jennie evans and george all residing in park city mrs carpenter died in this city twenty one years ago deceased came to salt lake city in 1876 1875 ile he put in a winter at alta and worked in bingham during that year and on july 16 1876 he came to park city residing here continuously since that time in the early days of the park lie he worked at the old ontario under rat pat kervin james kervin nell gillis and david keith he also worked at the old daly under john judge and was foreman under jerry richardson at the old crescent mine and also worked at the old iron mine tor for col john A nelson I he Is enlisted in the army under the name of john parsons the latter being his in mothers others maiden name and which has caused some difficulty in securing a pension his father lived to be 96 95 years ot of age and this old gent lemans mother jacks grandmother Erand mother was years old alen she died john always aimed to enjoy life in his own way never interfering nith ith the Ws life of others he used tobacco all his long life when in nf new w york he N was as a bartender and a great fancier tor for bulldogs bull dogs and likely as an all round sport he had a younger brother frank carpenter who lived and died in park city several years ago ile he lins has two sisters back in england one of 0 whom he be never saw but who corresponds with tle the family regularly for years past mr air carpenter has aten endeavoring to get a pension our om the government but because continued on oa page two john carpenter dies conti continued aued from page one of technicalities it was denied this althis yc atar ar however senator reed smoot Irita interested rested himself in the matter matterand and after learning the facts prepared and presented al a special bill to congress allowing the old man aerl month the bill passed and the pension would have commenced next lie december cember |
