aum erous and such celebrations are flays days of 31 great acclaim and should not be for some of our greatest blessings ire are the result of war and sacrifice but there are other occasions when celebrations have their place and ne Me the acquirement of heritages no 10 less priceless tho achieved by other means peace hath her victories no less renowned than war was penned by the immortal milton w when hell the great had overcome over corrie all opposition but the bet had in m mind ind no reproach or ad monition but a call to that time when peace rules ies the day when reason rules the he mind throughout human history there has been the invisible touch of the immortal hand the brush of the divine artist la in planning and directing the destinies ot of mankind and in those periods ot of re r pose when mind and heart had tree free com coja manlon there have been born to the everlasting everl as ting glory of humanity finer anil holler bolle r things those moments in the history ot of mankind have been the times when men bullied into stone and wood and steel the ideals and dreams ot of other days arid ami when the supreme architect laid down the first design on the trestle board ite fra masonry was born its history Is so interwoven with all that ill at Is good and noble and mathematically true that it would be an impossible undertaking to discover and chart the tha devious channels through which humanity has ridden to safety on stormy seas in its ministrations and because ot of them its craftsmen irom from time to time have places of abode wherein the work laid down by the master workman could be better done and the building of such temples have been occasions often times and rightly for certain celebrations and commemorations we are assembled here this evening tor for the tee purpose of celebrating the anniversary niver sary of uintah lodge no 7 F bud and A AT of utah we shall commemorate commemorator comme morato that thai event it if we may by reviewing a part of its eventful history and reflecting on the purposes arid and appraising the characters of those noble men whose viston vision led them to erect on these eternal hills this masonic lodge dedicated to god and consecrated to the service ot of mankind with great opposition to overcome handicapped by lack of members and with no treasury yet they persisted in their efforts and by faith alone brought forth in this community this imperishable monument to their memory and the glory of those who shall come after them the and what of the history of uintah lodge no 7 no stain rests on her shield no praise but well deserved no duty done except through love and sacrifice no wonder that our grand lodge I 1 Is s justly proud of her and that her sister i lodges are glad to rejoice in her glory philip henry emerson M W 0 M on A august u gust 30 1880 granted a dispensation and on november 10 of the same year her charter was issued on november 30 1880 deputy grand master wm win F james assisted by other officers of the grand lodge of utah instituted the tha lodge and installed its officers through the courtesy of our grand secretary the tha archives of the grand lodge were placed at my disposal and I 1 spent some interesting hours in going over the old documents pertaining to the events leading up to and including the ceremonies of that evening event ng it was of especial interest to learn that in a blinding snow storm the brethren of f the grand lodge started on their g gramage to this city on that event eventful day the old records show as records usually do the material results of the efforts of the men who in that day almost a halt half century ago age undertook the labor of creating out of a mere handful ot of masons the organization which has with stood trials and vicissitudes of more than uncommon severity the spiritual results intangible and invisible have been and are are still vital factors for the good of many resides fi Il in this city but with the lodge duly constituted continued on page seven I 1 masons celebrate anniversary continued irom from page one so no event of any special importance occurred until one day the cry ol of fire anre aroused the city to its peril a devastating conflagration swept these hills and when the flames had bad vanished the records and property of ninian lay jay burled beneath the smoldering ashes with no place in which to hold their meetings or take stock of the present and plan tor for the future al M 11 W 0 M murdock murdoch on july a 9 1808 1898 issued a 9 dispensation Pen pensa tion permitting the br ethern to assemble in due form on a mountain top and then was visualized such art an event as comes to few men to behold on july 13 1898 more than two hundred masons representing every lodge in utah boarded the old utah central train and alth with uncle joe bywater at th the throttle arrived in park city to have a part in that historic meeting the records record 5 can not tell the story as it was there e are present tonight to night some brethren who were there they will understand that afternoon some of the br bretherd ethern with commendable zeal climbed the mountain and arranged the ground lor for the meeting place As in the days clays of old when for security lodges wore were held on mountain tops so fco was enacted again the drama ot of freemasonry mab onry with the sky tor for their canopy and the bright stars tor their lights on that great mountain known now and since that day by the name of mount Ma cabonic bonic uintah lodge held a meeting which has since become a landmark in the annals of freemasonry in utah men mea do not climb mountains at night and in the name of almighty god as gemble in holy brotherhood with other than holy purposes in mind those men that night of 0 the long ago in the name of their most sacred supreme grand M master aster spread their benedictions over this community which are felt to this day As uintah no ko 7 grew in numbers the need for a new building for the use only of their lodge became a pressing question and after the most earnest endeavors and the lapse ot of several years the building in which we meet tonight to night was dedicated december 3 1909 by ar M W 0 at schramm assisted by the officers of the grand lodge in the face of all that had gone before arid and situated in a community whose very existence depended wen and to a less degree still depends upon the continuance of the treasures in the earth that hardy group of men dared to build this edifice magnificent in its conception no less than an abiding faith in divine providence and a vision to see the necessity tr succeed the guiding star of a holy purpose led them on their way the gland chaplan on that occasion was parson simpkins beloved ot of all who knew him the wonderful melody ot of his eloquence can never be forgotten in celebrating this anniversary we are paying homage to the memory of those noble pioneers of freemasonry who have gone on we are commemorating the deeds they performed and counting the treasures which they have bc be quested to us I 1 believe the greatest pleasure that come to a man in his declining years Is the memory of 9 a life vell spent and the greatest heritage which he be can leave to his posterity is the lesson of self sacrifice after all there Is little else worth while we need not discount the value of material things they are the just rewards of honest efforts or the unjust rewards of dishonest efforts tor for such Is the way of human kind and through and because of our frailties freemasonry has a place to oil fill and a purpose to serve in retrospect over the lapse 0 ot f 47 years the events which are within the memory of some ot of us here tonight alford afford serious reflection tor for the thinking mind we hear olten often the query Is the world growing better belter or worse to answer such a question to the satisfaction of an intelligent tell igent questioner we should have to comprehend all the agencies which affect human life and measure accurately all the emotions which spring from the human heart then from every vantage point of human progress gaze upon the world rid from our own hill of vision and there by faith atone alone see spread out human endeavor and its products as a part of the div ine plan I 1 believe that the contributions of ernest effort honest purpose and good intentions are its as great and sincere today as they hey have been in any age I 1 believe that deep in the heart in 0 f mankind ts Is nurtured the seed ot of unselfish service and self sacrifice to a greater degree then than in ill any time gone by I 1 be bleve bieve that the opportunity to do good to our fellow man Is growing greater all the time because the means lor for spreading good is increasing within these four walls sit bit a representative senta tive group ot of men and women who I 1 dare say ate are giving more or of their time and substance to the relief of 0 the tha poor and distressed the than they ever have done clone before the phyl philosophy ot of freemasonry free masonry inculcates cule cul ates cates the practice of 0 morality aad arid right living and the exercise ot of temperance prudence fortitude and justice in our relations with our fellow men its symbols are as ancient its as the crafts w which aich gave them birth their symbolism Is applicable to all the affairs ot of human life the constant attendance at lodge instills in one a subconscious use and application ot of the truths as taught here and by and by as the lapsing years add their story to our lives we are better able to walk the straight and narrow path in the hour of trial and adversity to the women of freemasonry free masonry those wives and mothers and sisters and sweethearts who have watched by the fireside while their men made progress in the lodge all credit Is due their forbearance and self sacrifice deserves more than honorable mention to them belong much that has made freemasonry free masonry a power in our community life this temple otters offers refuge to the worthy one ho seeks advancement it la is a sanctuary secure against the frailties of the world i here within its walls vicarious effort is of no avail As in the world at large ahle success worth while depends upon sincere personal effort and honest purpose so BO in this sacred hall he be who receives most Is he who most freely givis gives the lessons of service and sa crince learned here have left the impress of their value on many a fireside within the confines of these hills and the sorro sorrow W I 1 and grief and burden of those in d distress a I 1 have hae been made lighter by th the service ot of those who have gone forth with love in their hearts for their fell fellow man mal 1 the pioneers of 0 uintah no 7 1 well their efforts have been not in vain the brethren who have succeeded them are richer and stronger because ot of their hardships the finest gold comes from the greatest heat the sweetest soul from greatest sorrows borrow the happiest lile life from days well spent with centuries of glor glorious lous history behind her with her present preeminent pre eminent
