Show THE Wednesday, June 26, 1974 MRK CITY cmum Page 2 LEHMER WANTED: One Baseball Field COMMENTS Dear Editor, As far as the petition goes, less than 319 signatures after four 'days and nights of intensive ef- MORE INTEREST EQUALS BETTER GOVERNMENT The three hundred plus citizens who attended the City Council meeting of June 20th provided what appeared to be a reassuring indication of civic concern in Park City. Unfortunately, the large turnout for this meeting makes the ordinary Council sessions (those which do not promise personality conflicts and confrontations) suffer by comparison. The average Thursday night City Council meeting is usually populated by a handful of people, most of whom have matters pending Council con- sideration. One gets the impression that most people consider the Park City Council a Mickey Mouse organization which indulges in idle chatter while paying an assortment of bills. Some seem to think the Council members seek election to attain social status rather than to shape the Citys future. Whether it is realized. or .not, the City Council holds great power over us as individuals and its actions directly affect every resident of Park City. Be it education, recreation or public utilities, things many of us take for granted do not exist by accident. They are the result of research, planning, and positive action. The previously mentioned meeting is exemplary of the scope and magnitude attached to City Council decisions. It was literally a million dollar night. Contracts involving in excess of that magic number were approved. This is not Hicksville, it is a growing resort community whose operating budget involves large amounts of money, your money. But aside from the monies collected from the citizenry, contracts are awarded which entail the expenditure of even greater sums and the projects wbich these contracts detail have immediate impact on the community. The June 20th Council meeting was the least arbitrary and mostproductive session in recent memory. Was this circumstance merely coincidental or was it due to the many pairs of inquisitive eyes focused on each member. Under such scrutiny, words are weighed and actions deliberated before one dares make a move. Public opinion is the strongest of regulating forces in government and an informed and knowledgeable public regulates best. It seems a shame that so much is transpiring around us and yet so few take the time to find out what its all about. The Park City Council is a tool which should be used by the people of Park City to create the environment desired by the majority. However, this tool cannot be expected to fulfill its purpose if guiding supervision is not supplied. The Council is not endowed with supernatural perception. The wishes of the people cannot be pursued if these wishes are kept secret. A more vital interest in the business of city government could prevent city affairs from being distilled into personal battles. When the collective voice of the public is audible, it is extremely difficult for any one person, be he mayor or councilman, to divert the City Council from the path which leads to the greatest good for the greatest number of people. The fire has been kindled. Can it be maintained? FISHING GEAR MIN fort is rather a pathetic figure. I consider it a compliment to me that so few persons saw fit to sign the petition. This fact and the number of persons who appeared voluntarily at the coufidl meeting to support me make it obvious that I speak for a great number of Park City people who want their voices heard. I hope the mayor and the council will listen. I am sorry for the embarrassment the petition caused my friends who signed it under the mistaken belief it was the little league petition. Sincerely, Mary Lehmer Councilman DISAPPOINTMENT Dear Editor, As a former supporter of the Mayor, I think his recent grandstanding buffoonery has seriously eroded his image and dignity of the citys highest office. His braggadocio as the homework king and big time operator has not been supported by the facts and his behavior. The other members of the City Council should be commended for see Coun- cilman Leon Uriarte, and Recreation Director Kathy Kocinski at 9:30 AM on Saturday, June 22nd. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the feasibility of constructing a Little League baseball field and establishing . Pony League baseball . All three of the city officials were of the opinion that a temporary official Western Boys Baseball Field could be placed in the City Park. This would entail erection of the backstop, which the city already possesses, construction of portable dugouts, the building of a pitchers mound, and placement of a moveable outfield fence. Mayor Price observed that land for a permanent field could become available in the near future in that nearly sixty acres will be donated to the city by developers of residential communities. He stated that part of this donated acreage could be utilized for the construction of ball fields. The main concern in establishing a Pony League for boys from ages 6 is the lack of equipment. This problem evaporated when Dr. Mark Simmons, principal of PCHS, said the high school had new equipment which could be donated to the program. In another recreation matter, it was decided that the public tennis court would be available to all age groups during all hours of operation. A time limit of one hour for doubles play and forty-fiv- e minutes for singles play was set. 13-1- in not allowing an overreaction to this frustrated egotist. A critical need for har- judgement mony and skillful problem solving techniques in dealing with this citys immediate future has been demonstrated by their recent actions. The Mayors reinstatement allowed a personal face saving, but it will not lend to the . full respect and trust he once had.
