Show THE Wednesday, March 27, 1974 PARK CITY LETTERS TO THE EDITOR , Dear Editor: Your editorial of March 13, regarding the World Super Hot Dog Championships does a disservice to the people of Park City and to the hundreds of people who worked so long and hard to make the event a resounding success. It is not my intent to refute the many inaccuracies and unwarranted innuendos contained in your article. But, on behalf of the many people you maligned, I would like to set the record straight on some matters. You imply that safety was jeopardized, you state that rules were not adhered to, and that protests were ignored. Such1 irresponsible comments need answering. The safety of the competitors and of the spectators was everyones most important consideration. No IFSA safety regulation was broken. The only complaint involved the aerial jump and Beconta turned that over to IFSA, whose safety committee did - in fact - build the jump and landing and approved it for the competition. Beconta rules differed slightly in some cases with IFSA rules, but during the events all items were agreed upon by both IFSA and Beconta. Because of alot of effort and continued concern for safety throughout the entire event, not one competitor was injured (we havent heard from the streaker, so we assume he made it ok, too). There are numerous other inaccuracies in your remarks, but anyone who was on the hill during the race would recognize them and they dont warrant comment (incidentally, there was no canif applause ned applause, came over the loudspeaker it was only applause from recordings of live performances by the groups used, and many of these recordings were selected by the racers themselves). Your implications that the people of Park City did not put forth effort, and that the Greater Park City Company showed an over-evidelack of enthusiasm, which you state left a bad taste that comes from knowing that something was missing or could have been better," is absolutely inconsistent with what really happened. Hundreds of people worked very hard and spent a lot of long hours to demonstrate a sincere interest in insuring the success of the race. Let me cite a few examples: the people of Park City who effectively, efficiently and provided lodging, food and other services to one of the largest crowds in Park Citys history; the Ski Patrol and Mountain Crew who worked fifteen straight days on. installing fencing, comhill munications, power, under adverse weather conditions to insure that the judging stand exceeded established standards; the competitors themselves who were cooperative, enthusiastic, and willing to do everything asked of them to make the event enjoyable and successful (even those who did not qualify or win); the Sno Cat Crew who superbly groomed the ballet run, hauled equipment, supplies, materials and also provided tranon for people the sportation mountain; the Lift Crews who ran the lifts early and late to help accommodate the crowds ; the cooperation of the Highway Patrol, Summit County Sheriffs Office and the Park City Police alpng with the extra power that was added to handle parking and crowd control ; the dozens of press people and photographers who covered the event accurately, fairly and completely; the superb cooperation of Beconta s crews. It would be impossible to detail every person or group who contributed so much to the event. Were their efforts appreciated? The following unsolicited comments were received at the Resort during the past week, from people who really know what theyre talking about: The event came off as the best ski event thats happened in this country in many years. It would not have been such a tremendous success without the huge effort cum and cooperation of everyone in Park City. Speaking for IFSA, we would like to have one of our major events at Park City next Bernie Weichsel, InDirector, ternational Freestyle Skiers year. Executive Association. This was the highlight of Beconta s season, and it was a sincere pleasure to work with the Park City people. We hope youll see alot of Beconta events at Park City in the future. Tom Beconta LeRoy, Director, Cup. We were completely delighted with the cooperation we received at Park City. Bryce Weisman, Producer, ABC Wide World of Sports. The race at Park City was a milestone in the history of Doug freestyle competition. Pfeiffer, Editorial Director, SKIING Magazine. Your writer states If we were proud of our area, why not at least put forth some effort to show it? Many people put forth a great deal of effort. Fortunately, it was well worth it. Sincerely, Roger L. Ha ran of Marketing V.P.-Direct- or Dear Editor, The Park City Police Department, if not at all times tactful, has always been cooperative and helpful. As local bartenders it is nice to know that if an occasion should arise which requires help. a simple 10 cent phone call is all that is necessary. However, there is one recent incident that we feel has, or could have, an affect on all of Park City. On Thursday, March 21, at approximately 9:30 in the evening, SPORTING preparation and signing ly literally preparing the entire site for the event; -- - the carpenters who worked SCoom'att distinction gifts363ofMAIN STREET three gentlemen were swearing their vows to destroy one of our local establishments. And, due to the fact that our local police have encouraged us to call, we did. A policeman arrived promptly, reviewed the situation, excused himself with a comment to the effect, This could be difficult. An individual followed him outside and asked him not to leave. Upon which his comment was Tell them to leave. The individual I am just a answered, customer. The officers return was tell the bartender to ask them to leave. The officer then proceeded to drive away, leaving the bartender and his local to handle the customers situation to the best of their ability. grossly lacking. I feel the hot dog skiing really suffered because of the contest rules. The contestants, in ah attempt to remain in the contest, skied conservatively and far below their ability. The spectators, when they were treated with an exciting run and some brilliant recoveries, any contestants will enter, wouldnt it be wise to have the rules such that the contest promotes exciting skiing instead of stifling a good performance? The Beconta set out to find the Master of the Mountain, but Id be willing to bet that most of the crowd would disagree about that title. If we carry the contest to an exaggerated but conceivable conclusion, the winner could have been someone who snowplowed the course but managed to stay on his feet while everyone else fell. Bob Van Epps protection when we need it ! Signed, Doug and Bill Dear Editor, Well, we all made it through the crowds, the excitement, and the hassles were ultimately disappointed by the sight of a red disqualification flag. Who can blame a contestant for taking it easy when one fall might eost him thousands of dollars. If Park City is ever again honored with a contest of this magnitude, and if Because nothing happened later it is easy to say, No harm, no foul. We say let us have some connected with the Beconta Cup. The question is, was it worth it? Was the Beconta Cup all it was built up to be. I think not.
