Show THE Wednesday, March 27, 1974 MRK crrv COALITION Page 10 Park City Rugby Team Begins Practice The Park City Rugby Union held its first official practice of the 1974 season on Wednesday, March 20. Approximately twenty men turned out for the initial session. In past seasons the Union has had problems with direction and leadership due to the lack of a coach. Alamo Dave Mueller has resolved this dilemma by offering to step down from the playing ranks in order to devote his full attention to coaching. Coach Mueller has been quoted as saying, I wont non-playi- ng unless play necessary. absolutely This years club will have a central core of experienced players at the skilled positions but almost half of the positions on the team will be open to people who are new to the team or new to the game of rugby. One of Alamos chief objectives will be to infuse game situations into the practices as much as possible. He believes this will enable the novice players to develop a feel for the game of rugby. The success of this aspiration hinges somewhat on the availability of the pitch (field). Hopefully, the snow will have dissipated and outdoor workouts will commence by April 1, allowing a month of preparation before the season begins. Plans call for two practices during the week with a game-typ- e practice and social situation on Saturdays if weather permits. The Beehive Rugby Union Spring Schedule does not pit Park City against any weak teams which means strong preseason practices are imperative in order to compensate for lack of experience. The Rugby club plays at the University of Utah on May 4th and then opens the home season against the Dead Goat Touring Side on May 11th. This fixture (game) will be followed by home appearances against B.Y.U. and the Provo Athletic Gub (i May 18th and May 25th, respectively. The Park City Rugby Football Clubs summer schedule has not yet been established but there are tentative plans for a trip to Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. This will be a six day tour sometime around Labor Day and will include a fixture with either the Laramie, Wyoming Rugby Gub or the Missoula, Montana Rugby Club on the way up and a fixture with Sun Valley on the way back. Other teams which will be played during the summer include sides from Aspen, Steamboat Springs, Vail, Provo, the Dead Goat, and the Salt Lake Athletic Gub. There will be no fewer than ten home games. On September 21st and 22nd, the Fourth Annual Park Gty Rugby Challenge Cup will be held. A goal of sixteen teams has been determined as the optimum number for a successful social tournament. Returning help from last years side includes Skip Schriff , scrum half, Porter Condon, fly half, Don Sturges, outside center, Steve The Nipper Anderson, fullback (and last seasons sparkplug), Rick Cappe, prop, Tom Randall, breakaway, Craig Strawberry Masters, hooker, Dave Bodner, an excellent number eight, Dean Brown, breakaway, and Norm Antelope Hall, who plays all positions well. Also returning, after a two year absence, are Bob Theobold and( Ken Binatena. They were charter members of the 1970 team and they played in what Coach Mueller calls the Dark Ages of Park Gty rugby. As opposed to other seasons, this years dub will be composed exclusively of Park Gty residents. In the past, two factions composed the side, one from Park City and one from Salt Lake. This resulted in an awkward practice situation and lobbying for playing positions. Many Salt Lakers from last year's club will be offering their services to the Dead G6at this year. Coach Mueller wanted to emphasize that on many occasions last year Park City would not have been able to field a team if it HAL TAYLOR ASSOC. P.O. Box 804 were not for players from S.L.C. He feels the caliber of the team was upgraded and all facets of its game were bolstered by the Salt Lake players, despite the schism. Alamo also stressed the need for new players. This should be the first summer that an ample supply of potential ruggers remains in town. He noted that inexperience will hurt in that, unless exceptional, a player requires five games to get a feel for the. game and to be knowledgeable of the rules. Thus the necessity of game-typ- e practices. At the end of the first month of practice, no one player should be vastly superior to any other at his particular position. This will enable the club to replace an injured player with a capable substitute. The team will need at least twenty-fiv- e people to practice regularly at the fifteen positions because injuries, work, and travel commitments will thin the ranks at various times tne 'season. Coach Mueller says that in the early season P.C. will play to its strength, which will be a control-typ- e game with the inside backs putting the ball back to the forwards. The forwards will be inexperienced but will be big, aggressive, and will cover the ball like a blanket. As the season progresses and the backs acquire set movements, which require a great deal of finesse, they will operate as a unit with effectiveness and will balance the attack. By the third game, the backfield should become a scoring threat and as Coach Mueller says, Sturges and Condon have played too much rugby to be stifled. This season promises to be a successful and exciting one, offering a plethora of memorable and enjoyable moments to both participants and fans.
