However, for. Art Durante, the only way to assess the recent growth is from' a purely utilitarian point of view, i.e., how it affects business. While talking, Art recalled his earlier days in Park City, 28 years ago, when he first moved ouf here from New Jersey. That was in 1947, close on the coattails of World War II. That was also a very tight time, both for money and for merchandise. When Art first moved here, the population was about 3,500, which wasnt too bad, except that he ran into two problems. First, he just couldnt get any merchandise to stock the store. Second, when he finally was able to get the stock, people had begun to drift out of town, and most of the people still in town couldn't afford to buy very much. Like the old adage, things got worse before they got better. When the Silver King Mine closed down in 1951, the population dropdown to about ped way off was the time when That 1,100. business was really down. It didnt get much better either, Art recalled, until the mining company, United Park City Mines, got the government loan to build what used to be called The Center. That was around 1963-6UPCM didnt really have a lot of money to drop into the ski area, so it just kind of moved along until Greater Park City Company bought it. With the appearance of GPCC, things really started moving in and around town. If you look around town and at the Resort, and then remember that GPCC has only been in town for three and a half years, you begin to realize just how the momentum is literally and building up 4. ! annual ' figuratively. Art, to a certain extent, thinks that the building around town is great, with the qualifiction that now that its happening, we have to make sure that its for everybodys benefit. He admits that GPCC is spending all the money, and that obviously they would like to have something to say about what theyre building, , but he also feels that there has to be a middle path that will satisfy both the Resort and the town. One : fact that everyone has to realize is that before the Resort ap- pea red, Park City as a town didnt have much of anything to offer to the residents and businessmen alike. He realizes that its hard for many to adjust to the ever accelerating growth, but the need for growth is here. His wife Irene said that when their children were growing up, there were no jobs for them, but now there are restaurants and gift shops for the kids in town to work in. When asked about the building the Park Avenue condominiums and Snow Country Art, apartments in particular in his usual honest and straightforward manner, stated that although he may not like them, number one: hes not going to buy one, and number two: what does everybody expect the Resort to do build replica Victorian mansions? Although they all may look similar.. Art feels that with adequate landscaping, it will probably look very nice down there. Speaking on the moritorium placed on building, Art feels that this is good, in that it will get the - water and sewer problems straightened out. He stated, however, that they will have to hurry up on it because with no building there will be no expansion, and with no expansion.
