Show , August a, 1974 III cur Page 2 Art Festival Labeled BEST EVER Misteaks A PYRRHIC VICTORY The Fifth Annual Park City Art Festival was a resounding success. The Arts Foundation is to be commended for producing, aesthetically and financially, the best festival ever while operating amid a storm of controversy. Although the unnecessary obstacles were overcome, the battle took its toll. It appears the majority, if not all, of the Art Festival Committee members will not actively participate in the production of next years event. Fed up and frustrated were two phrases commonly heard from committee members. Most of the complaints lodged against the Arts Committee came from a handful of artists who were victims of this years jury system. We reassert our contention that subjective evaluation of art to be displayed at Park Citys Art Festival is necessary to insure continued success. Jurying precludes the exhibition of inferior works, provides a means of limiting the number of entrants, and attracts more talented artists. All three aspects are essential to the upgrading of the festival and a subsequent rise in stature. It is unfortunate that some deserving artists may be excluded from the Art Festival due to the particular tastes of a judge but the system does not exist which is universally just and can operate under the perimeters of the given circumstances. A Sixth Annual Park City Festival is assured. It is assured not by the communitys cultural aspirations but rather by the inherent financial rewards. However, the number of wallets which will engulf Park City in years to come is directly related to the quality of works presented. Therefore, aside from common sense, it is just good business to impose controls on the art which is allowed to decorate Main Street. Next year there will be an opportunity for new faces and new ideas to exert their influence on the festival. We regret the loss of the old faces but judging from comments made, it is not possible to convince them to remain. For those of you who were grossly dissatisfied with this year's event, heres your chance to hop over the fence and make everybody happy. well in selling their wares. Local artist Jennifer Giddings Sharp had her best sales ever. Best festival ever! was the phrase used by Arts Foundation members Victor Buck and John Sharp. Mayor John Price charactevent as erized the two-da- y very successful. Based on the estimated 60,000-70,00-0 people who attended , the quantity and quality of art, the absence of any major disturbance, and the ringing of cash registers, these would seem to be fair summations of the Fifth Annual Park City Art Festival. The popularity of the festival was manifest by the line of parked cars which snaked its way down the entire length of Park Avenue and finally terminated at Thaynes Canyon. With all available parking places filled, including the Resorts two large lots, police were forced to turn aspiring visitors away. A survey of participating artists indicated the majority fared Last weeks issue of the Coalition was the biggest ever. Last weeks Coalition also set a record (no pun intended) for the number of mistakes in one edition. We will not detail every miscue because that would consume much space, which, in turn, increases the possibility of mistakes in thisn istakes article. We will, however, touch on some of the more glaring oversights. In our sp&ial supplement, we printed .what we thought to be a comprehensive list of Park City businesses. In view of the large number of shops, restaurants, hotels, rental units, etc., it is understandable that we could have missed one or two of the smaller, ldCv volume enterprises. And we did. We apologize to the Greater Park City Company for our negligence. We promise to create a resort category in future sup- plements. We offer our apologies to the Street Main businesses prospered, of course, but a poll of local merchants largely responsible for the management of the extremely heavy traffic. This was no small task and they performed Commission for labeling it as the City Council or we apologize to the City Council for confusing than with the PlanPlanning ning Commission appropriate. , whichever is Along with these two minor errors, there other were omissions, misspellings, copy out of position, and other regrettable a occurrences. Although no newspaper containing mistakes is hard to come by, we will strive to keep the Coalition o n aprofesionellevil. In fact, some restaurants reported their night business was down from the previous festival. Perhaps the most amazing statistic of all was that only one arrest was made during this mingling of the masses, and this was a traffic violation.
