The day we landed, four bombers had been lost. That airplane was shot down on its second mission. mis-sion. Our crew got along fine. One of the crew was 29 years old, so we called him "Grandpa." "Grand-pa." My first mission was across Italy toward Yugoslavia. We got hit pretty badly by flak on that mission. The Germans, using radar-controlled guns, could put up flak in sheets, lev els, or tracking, but that day; most of the flak was beneath us. v :.. Each German flak tower had three to five batteries, with three to five guns in each battery. So you could have flak corning at you from 18 to 26 guns. . x The anti-aircraft shells exploded ex-ploded in a flash, and if you could see the flash, you were far enough away to be safe. Editor's note: This is the third in a series about Bob Peterson of Pleasant Grove. Peterson flew his full assignment of combat missions total of 50. And he encountered flak on every mission (flak is a German acronym for Fliegerabwehrkanonen "flyer defense cannons"; curiously, it's become a common slang term in English, meaning "criticism"). Because you had headphones on, you didn't hear the flak hit the airplane, but you eould feel it. When you came off a raid, you felt like you'd been beat, just because of the concussions from the flak. When we got back from the first mission, we counted 40 holes in our right wing. So that mission was quite exciting. We were told that on one of our missions to Athens, there would be very little flak, but the Germans must have been shooting birds for practice. We got shot at pretty badly. A burst right in front of the nose of the airplane blew the nose turret cover off. The gunner wheeled around and, came back into the fuselage of the airplane. " I wore a flak suit in the ball turret part of the time, but getting in and out of the turret tur-ret with it on was difficult, so I usually left it right at the top of the turret. On one mission, a piece of flak hit in the back of the turret seat. We went to Athens to bomb the airport, which the Germans were using us-ing as an escape route out of Africa. Our bombardiejr wasn't even going toput his flak suit on, untjl he saw the rest of us doing it. The flak was heavy and extremely ex-tremely accurate. One burst wounded the bombardier, and if he hadn't been wearing his flak suit, he would have been killed. There were two holes in the center of his vest, which had deflected the force of the flak.
