Show Thursday, April 12, 2007 OREM TIMES Page 5 NEWS AND IDEAS FROM CLASSROOMS AND EDUCATORS Mountain View High School mock trial team Michael Rigert NORTH COUNTY STAFF Comprised mostly of sophomores, sopho-mores, one of Mountain View High School's mock trial teams surprised opponents and impressed judges, taking home second place honors at the 2007 Mock Trial state finals. On April 3, the Bruin squad went up against 32 other high schools from around the state at the Scott Matheson Courthouse Court-house in Salt Lake City and was bested only by three-time state champion Judge Memorial Memo-rial High School, said David Carpenter, the Bruin teams' club advisor. In the competition, each school's team members play the roles of attorneys, witnesses, witness-es, clerks and bailiffs, arguing their case in front of practicing attorneys who act as judges. In this year's ripped-from-the headlines scenario, a fictional school district has trouble with a high school student who allegedly posted comments and pictures on his MySpace.com Web site that school officials believe spurred fights at the school. The plaintiff, plain-tiff, the student, claims a faculty fac-ulty member at the high school bruin BRAYDEN SANTO Happy Easter Bruins. Each school takes turns being the plaintiff and the defense and the judges make the call how well the teams followed fol-lowed court procedure, made their case and examined and cross-examined witnesses. When the more experienced Bruin team didn't make the finals fi-nals due to it being short members mem-bers who were on a choir trip, it fell to the Mountain View B team to take the reins. After going undefeated in the regular season, the Mountain View team defeated Weber in the quarterfinals and Woods Cross in the semifinals before losing a close final decision deci-sion to Judge Memorial in the finals, Carpenter said. "One of the judges said after the trial it was a matter of style versus substance," he said. "Our team was more creative, the other team was more well prepared pre-pared ... Our guys did well in flexibility and toughness. They did a good job cross-examining the other team's witnesses and making them sweat some." Into the middle of the season, sea-son, the preparation involved for the two Bruin mock trial teams is as intense as any- it last time. So basically, this week is going to be pretty long, because the band is leaving in three days to go to southern California. Sarah Miner, a sophomore on the team whose acting skills were tested by her portrayal of both a high school student witness wit-ness and the role of a school principal under relentless cross-examinat ion. "They were both difficult. I don't like it. A fake bake is not natural and sometimes goes terribly wrong. For example, ex-ample, I don't think I'd like to have orange skin, but if you do it's fine with me. I also heard that going to a salon causes cancer. It was a challenge to learn but it was well worth it." Miner and sophomore Greer Bates, who was one of the Bruins' key attorneys, thought a large factor in their success ironically was that the team was a young and relatively inexperienced in-experienced group. "A lot of it was because we were able to relax," Miner said. "We sat back and had fun with it. If we go on, we're having fun. If not, that's cool." Bates said the fact that the team was tight -knit group also helped. "We were like the JV (junior varsity) team," she said. "We actually didn't really expect much." Though Bates was also a member of junior high school mock trial team, she said the unscripted nature of the high school competitions has taught her to be quick on her intellectual intellec-tual toes in a rapidly developing develop-ing situation. Similarly, Miner said "I've learned more how to talk in front of people and to be more relaxed ... under pressure." With warm weather coming, it's a lot nicer, (and healthier) to just lie outside and get a tan. Why is that so hard? It is a lot easier and actually cheap as free. In other words, don't go to the tanning salon when you could just lie outside for free and get a better looking tan.
