"Having them capable and competent and able to work without direct supervision will allow me to concentrate my efforts ef-forts here (at the Friendship ' Center)," Ortiz said. "If I didn't have the right team, it probably wouldn't work." j The director also praised secretary Young as "extremely capable and competent", and said she will be able to help at times when he is pulled more toward the recreation part of the job. -x , V . , With the division managers handling responsibilities in their areas, Ortiz said his work involves directing the overall recreation program and planning plan-ning for new facilities. He is highly involved with plans to provide for future needs. A current emphasis is in planning toward complying with the master plan on park development, which calls for neighborhood parks to be within 58 mile of most residences in the city. Orem particularly needs park facilities in the - northeast, northwest, and southwest quadrants. Property has been acquired for the Springwater Park and Nielsen's Grove, but there are at present no funds for development. The city still owns the Lakeside property a 55-acre parcel at 400 South and Geneva Road which voters turned down for development as a sports park in a bond election several years ago. Ortiz said he has been involved in-volved with trying to identify a funding source for Lakeside. Ortiz said there are 8,000 seniors within the city limits, and one of his main goals is to launch an awareness program that will built usage of the cen-' ter, which he described as a Alpine Board of Education sets new boundary By a unanimous vote of all five members, the Alpine School District Board of Education has set the boundaries for the new elementary school now under construction in the Lindon area. The new school, as yet unnamed, will open its doors to new students stu-dents this coming fall. The decision was made during the Board's monthly business meeting meet-ing held this week in American Fork. The setting of the new boundary follows weeks of input and planning by patrons and a boundary committee established estab-lished in the area. "This . decision represents an efficient ; model of educational planning," said Alpine Superintendent, Dr. Steven Baugh. "First a boundary bound-ary committee was established composed of citizens and educators; then public input was harvested; next recommendations recommenda-tions were made to the Board of -Education for study and review; finally a decision was made by the Board based on public concern con-cern and educational needs. We are indebted to all who provided input and to those who served on the committee, and especially to our staff member who coordinated coor-dinated the effort-Dr. Virginia . Johnson." The adopted motion follows the following boundaries: West on 2000 North200 South from the mountains to the canal west of 180 West, south following the canal to 1880 North, east on 1880 North including in-cluding the undeveloped cul-de-sac, south including the undeveloped un-developed Sumner Court, south on 200 West to 1600 North, west on 1600 North to State Street, north on State Street to 2000 North200 South, east on 2000 North200 South to 400 East, , North on 400 East & 400 North, east on 400 North (behind the ' south side homes) to the Mur-dock Mur-dock canal, south along the Mur-dock Mur-dock Canal to 300 North, east on 300 North to 835 East, north on 835 East to 400 North to the mountains. front Page "beautiful, magnificent facility... I daresay one of the finest in the country." The programs at the center are sound, Ortiz said, and the , hope is to "build on that and take them to greater heights." Emphasizing Em-phasizing that he was not criticizing what has been done in the past, Ortiz said that program pro-gram elements that may be expanded ex-panded or enhanced in the future fu-ture are the arts and crafts, carpentry, car-pentry, and health and physical fitness programs. In the latter category, Ortiz and his staff are looking at low impact aerobics classes and even weight-lifting, which he said has been proven to be good for all ages, including seniors, who are able to build bone mass through the activity and prevent or mitigate the impact of skeletal skele-tal diseases on their bodies. Ortiz said it might also be possible to build a program of information and education which would feature speakers on lifestyle, nutrition, physical fitness, oral hygiene, and many other health-related topics. Another goal is to improve communication com-munication and coordination with the Fitness Center programs that are applicable to seniors. "We have to be careful," Ortiz said. "We don't want to work the seniors too hard and risk injury to them, but we do want to bring in aerobics and programs that would fit the senior population." j The ongoing changes have V been softened by Summers' support, sup-port, Ortiz said. The impact has also been tempered by the fact that the seniors have been able to see firsthand that, in Ortiz words, "the city is not here to ' stifle them, but is concerned about their welfare." Ortiz said he has enjoyed getting to know the senior citizens in the community through his new appointment. "They are honest, and direct, and fun," he said. PTSA volunteers serve as co-presidents Canyon View PTSA has had a change of leadership. Previous PTSA president Eileen Crane, accompanied her family to England for an assignment. Larry and Kosann Everett were asked by Mrs. Crane to replace her. The Everetts volunteered to become the co-presidents of Canyon View Junior High PTSA. This is' a repeat experience ex-perience for Kosann, she served as PTSA president six or seven years ago, but this time Larry says their roles are reversed. He spends Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at the school. The day Larry was interviewed he 1 ' arrived at the school at seven in the morning. Kosann warned Larry that the position weuld take more time than imagined if you do the job right. ; Professionally, Larry works with the Utah Education Network Net-work (Distance Learning) installing in-stalling the state education network net-work in classrooms. He has worked from Slv George to Grouse Creek, from Blanding to Logan. Soon he will be installing the network in 20 classrooms between be-tween Payson and Lehi. According to Larry, PTSA is the tool by which parents become be-come part of the school. You do not have to endorse all of PTSA's positions to be involved. Larry is not sure what the faculty and administration expect ex-pect of PTSA, but Dr. McCoy has made himself available to the Everetts. Dr. McCoy has opened up to them and shares his confidence. con-fidence. There is an established trust. Larry compared his responsibility respon-sibility to stay updated in electronics with a teacher's need in education to stay updated. He sees that the school is responsible respon-sible for pride in the school, not the district. The responsibility is shared by principal, teachers, students and parents. Goals Larry and Kosann Everett hope to implement with their service include re-establishing a bimonthly newsletter (financing permitting). When , , PTSA committed to no fund . raisers, they also reduced organization or-ganization funds. Next year, they hope to increase in-crease membership in PTSA and MAR. 13-18 Wed. Communication and understanding under-standing between students, teachers and parents can clear-up clear-up problems and establish a smooth running school with a learning environment. Parents do not want to be involved at night, but more during the day. Involvement is essential. His child was "reached" by the teacher that another parent saw as a "problem" teacher not doing a good job. Larry also believes that in-service in-service is valuable for teachers. He is trying to establish an in-service in-service for the teachers. He is trying to establish an inservice for the teachers to provide training train-ing to deal with students who have Attention Deficit Disorder. BYU director to discuss Chinese exhibit Utah Valley State College will host the next Elder Quest Luncheon on Feb. 21 at noon, featuring guest speaker Dr. James A. Mason, director of the BYU Museum of Art. : "It's incredible display that is a once-in-a-lifetime experience," ex-perience," said Mason. Mason has been working with China since 1978 when he went over for the State Department Depart-ment to bring normalization between be-tween the two countries. He was instrumental in obtaining the Chinese exhibit that is being displayed at BYUs Museum of Art until March 16. Mason will give insight on how the exhibit was obtained from 21 museums and 9 provinces of China, and the origin of the items being displayed, dis-played, which span over 2400 years.;. ; Elder Questis a program open to those 55' and over who" are interested in life-long learning. learn-ing.
