Unfortunately, Un-fortunately, some 250,000 babies are born each year with serious mental or physical defects, transforming the joy of having a child into a tragedy. The March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation is dedicated to the good health of all babies, and during January tens of thousands of volunteers will be asking friends and neighbors to support the 1982 Mothers March. Originating in Phoenix, Arizona in 1950, the Mothers March was a new fund raising even to aid in combating poliomyelitis, the dread paralytic disease. After a cure for polio was discovered, the March of Dimes turned its attention to a much greater more complex problem -birth defects. The Mothers March played a significant role in the transition, raising funds to support March of Dimes programs of research, medical services, public and Warden Minor, regional director of the March of Dimes, Denver, presents Norm Anderson, volunteer chapter chairman of Utah, with the plaque designating Utah "Number One" in the nation for success in the Mother's March. Volunteer Needs At Red Cross ByBethKirwan The Central Utah Chapter of Red Cross is gearing up preparations for the potential spring flooding which has been predicted in, , this area. Many steps fiaerT)een taken by government agencies to try -to stave off a disaster, but natural elements are unpredictable, and Red Cross wants to be prepared. Red Cross's plans include emergency measures as well as practical assistance programs to ' reduce trauma to people who may be involved. According to Robert Eddington, Executive Director of Central Utah Chapter of Red Cross, many volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks. They are needed NOW to attend advance training sessions in the following categories: shelter management, damage assessment, case work interviewing, drivers, helpers in the feeding program, Registered Nurses who can spend some time if needed. Eddington says, "We can use anyone who has a little or a lot of time - we need them and can fit them , into our plans." An on-going volunteer need for Red Cross is for blood mobile workers. Volunteers are used at these mobile units to assist in the collection of blood which goes to hospitals on a regular basis and also as needed. The program is a far-ranging far-ranging and important service and, according to Red Cross officials, volunteers are depended upon to make it succeed. Eddington says that individuals with as little as two hours time or more are needed. A short orientation is all that is required. : .u; For more details, individuals interesteda in Jseing , a, Red Cross Volunteer, or who can give time to any of the following community needs, may call Voluntary Action Center of United Way at 374-8108 : Crisis Line, which provides confidential listening, emergency referrals, suicide intervention and rape intervention; will be starting their training for volunteers on January 18 and will go through February 10.
