Willis had maintained all along that these two could never perform as team players because of their individualistic style on and off the court. Werblin finally came to realize this after dumping Reed and re-hiring Red Holzman who could not make Haywood and McAdoo fit into a team-oriented team-oriented game plan. One other Knick who has enormous talent but is prone to going haywire every so often is Ray Williams. Holzman has been trying to make Ray see the light, but the swift guard is oblivious to Red's game plan and most probably will be traded off. Utilizing the draft picks they acquired through the McAdoo deal and the two second round picks that they have retained, the Knicks are in a position to improve their club pronto. With the Knicks in a great drafting position, some collegiate stars who are not eligible for the draft might decide to go 'hardship' in the hope that they will be picked and offered the big bucks and cosmic lure of New York City. Earvin 'Magic' Johnson and Darnell Valentine may be interested . . . The Dial American Cup gymnastics competition will be held in New York's Madison Square Garden on March 10 and 11.
