Botulism Breaks Out In Utah Lakes A moderately severe outbreak of botulism which occurred during the past dry summer should get some relief with the advent of cooler weather and occasional precipitation. Botulism outbreaks occurred along the east side of Great Salt Lake and Utah Lake and while no complete count of bird losses are available, it is estimated that fifteen to twenty-five thousand thous-and birds were lost. Hunters may find some ducks affected by botulism during the early part of this year's waterfowl water-fowl hunt, but there is no danger in taking these birds home to eat. The botulism organism affecting waterfowl is known as Type C and when affected birds are cook ed they are not dangerous for human consumption. Moderate losses of waterfowl water-fowl are experienced each year, but with the present water control practices on the major waterfowl areas, these losses are only a fraction of those experienced be fore state and federal agencies began to intensively manage major ma-jor waterfowl areas in Utah.
