Charley's Aunt Plays At Music Hall by Jeanne Thayne Just report your impressions," That was the instruction of the editor as he gave two passes to opening night of "Charlie's Aunt" to a neophyte reporter (beginner). So there I wason opening night, much impressed, very, very nervous ner-vous and evjoying one of the best seats in the house. MY IMPRESSIONS When the house lights dimmed PROMPTLY at 8:15 although patrons pa-trons were still streaming in, I knew immediately it would be a very professional performance. Part of the charm of Valley Music Hall is its simplicity-one's simplicity-one's whole attention is focused V LETS PLAN A fiARTY AT.., RIVERSIDE Roller Skating; .. The play "Charlie's Aunt" is veddy, veddy" English and the language was spoken so authentically authen-tically one could almost smell the tea and crumpets. Every word was distinct and elegant, reminiscent of cultured English in the Mid-Victorian Mid-Victorian era. We learned later this authenticity was Indeed genuine genu-ine as most of the cast are subjects sub-jects of England. LOUIS NYE -AD LIBS Louis Nye's performance as he cavorted through each scene impersonating im-personating Charlie's Aunt, completely com-pletely out of harmony with the decorum and frivolous propriety of other members of the cast, provided all the laughs. His ability to latch upon the unexpected unex-pected provided a few extras. For instance, he had been swinging swing-ing playfully at a fly with a fan (a most ingenluos prop in his hands) throughout the first two acts, then, to the surprise of all, the fly fell mortally wounded and lay big and black for all to see. His facial expression, strictly Loyis Nye, as he swept the fly from view was a comic bonus. It is improbable that Louis Nye could ever do two performances exactly alike. His humorous abilities abili-ties seem based on his gift for adlibitum. Each actor performed masterfully master-fully and provided enough vari-ence vari-ence in character types to capture cap-ture the interest of all. Backstage the performers testified tes-tified to the pleasure of working with Louis Nye. His great humor and ability to get things done properly impressed them. The play "Charlie's Aunt" was new to . ! all except Mr. Nye but all thought I it "tremendous fun" and portrayed this feeling in their performances. Jonathon Troy, the most perfect butler who ever butled, expressed the fear it would be impossible to remember the 18 entrances of the theater In the round in just a weeks practice time, but he did.
