Show Dr. Shumway Heads Alpine District Board of Education .Dr. R. Phil Shumway, Orem, was elected president of Alpine School District Board of Education, Educa-tion, with Frank C. Greenwood, retained as vice president. -The two were maned to office during last week's regular meeting meet-ing of the board. Mr. Shumway succeeds J. Murray Rawson, Orem, president for several years, who did not run for re-election last fall. , Eli K. Clayson, Orem, was sworn in for his first term. Mr. Clayson received a huge majority in a field of several candidates in last fall's election. Mr. Clayson was elected to the post vacated by Mr. Rawson. Dr. Boyd J. Lars( n, Leh;, was also sworn in for his first elected term. He has been a member of the board by appointment. Holdover members besides Mr. Shumway and Mr. Greenwood, Green-wood, include Harvey S mith, Pleasant Grow;. In other business transacted at the board's last regular meeting the auditor's report, submitted by S. Arvid Dodge, certified public accountant, was accepted. The district was commended by Mr. Dodge for the high level of record keeping at the district office. He also noted that many of the suggestions sug-gestions made on the previous audit were being followed with good results. Mr. Dodge suggested further improvement in the accounting procedures of the schools. Elijah Chlpman, district clerk, was directed dir-ected to assist in implementing the recommendations made. A report concerning the transporting trans-porting of students to and from school was made to the board by George I. Bone, supervisor of transportation. He indicated that the state was adhering more closely than in the past to the (UBiTzrnmm. r I J L. This means the district must look closely at its policy of transporting students in certain hardship areas when they lived under the regular distance dis-tance prescribed. It was recommended recom-mended that further consideration consider-ation be given in this area to determine policy for next year. Total school enrollment at the end of 1964 was 15,840 students, a little lower than at the beginning of the school year. The December percentage of attendance was nearly 95 per cent. The next meeting of the Alpine School District Board of Education Educa-tion will be held Wednesday, February Feb-ruary 10, 1965 at 7:00 a.m.inthe district office. As I walked down the halls I noticed a lot of different emotions throughout the studentbody. Many students were excitedly hurrying home to show their parents their accomplishments. Also, many parents were reminded of their promises of rewards for every A their student received. Other students stu-dents were not as anxious to get home, however. They were plan-ningadefense plan-ningadefense speech! The students enjoyed an excellent ex-cellent lyceum today, presented by one of America's Masters of the Accordion, Mike Aman. Mr. Aman is a seasoned trooper and an experienced entertainer. During Dur-ing his performance he brought the fun side and the educational side of the accordion to the students. Friday the students are to remain re-main at home while the parents come to confer with the teachers. The Citizens of the Week are: Marene Close, Nanci Jolley, and Clair Olsen. Orem Junior High News of Interest by Vickey Johnson Outstanding citizens for this week are as follows: Necla Man-guam, Man-guam, ninth grade, Jane Everitt, eighth grade, RevaClegg, seventh grade and Micheal McAllister, sixth grade. Yesterday the OJHS concert band gave a concert at Windsor school. Also yesterday mixed emotions were sent home, atfng with report cards. Tonight at 7 p.m. a band concert con-cert will be held In the OJH auditorium. Performing will be OJH's concert band and cadet band and Lincoln's concert band' and cadet band. The public is invited to attend. Tomorrow will be parent's visiting day. Before the Christmas vacation the students of Orem Junior High brought usable items from home to give to the Utah State Training School in American Fork. OJH sent to the training school mearly 1,000 gifts. This project, a tremendous tre-mendous success and also it brought a MerryV Christmas to many." '".! Scott PLUS-- "BLUE DENIM" THE VOICES OF OHS Greater lung power, more endurance, tougher vocal chords, more decibels, all added up to louder yells as the Orem High School seniors out-yelled the other two classes at the school's Fog, Storms Bring 25 Traffic Mishaps, Several Injuries Several persons were injured in a series of accidents brought about by the fog and snowstorms which hit Orem Friday and over the weekend. During the first 21 days of 1 965 only 1 5 traffic accidents occurred on Orem Streets. Then in one day, 19 separate accidents occurred, bringing the total to 40 as the Times went to press this week. Fog which cut visibility to almost nothing was responsible for Friday's series of accidents. In two different locations, three accidents occurred within minutes min-utes of each other. One such multiple accident at 550 E. 1400 S. resulted in injuries in-juries to one person and involved a parked van, two cars and a police car. In the fog the first car, driven by Robert Wayne Hansen, 1443 S. 605 E., hit a parked van lines trailer. As the police car was on Its way to investigate this accident, ac-cident, a car driven by Eldon K. Harward, 18, 1425 S. 640 E., struck the Hansen car. Mr. Harward Har-ward suffered minor Injuries In this collision. Damage to his car was estimated at $700. ., -: : As police officer Reed Burgner was making his investigation of these two accidents, his unoccupied unoc-cupied police car was struck by another car driven by Keith M. Pace, 21, 1483 S. 760 E., who received a citation for failure to control his vehicle. Mr. Harward also was cited for lack of due care. Bonnie D. Prestwich, 34, 183 N. 1200 W., received minor Injuries in a fog accident at 1200 W. Center Other driver involved was Joseph T. Meier, 31, 299 N. 985 W. Kim Burningham, 25, 865 W. 450 N., was hurt when her car was hit broadside in the fog by another driven by Melvln John Ramsay, 23, of Moroni, at 800 N. State. Mr. Ramsay was cited for running a red light. In a one-car accident at 1300 S. State, Mildred P. Weaver, 51, Casper, Wyo., was hurt when her car jumped the curb, went over an embankment, travelled 50 feet R' Dr. R. U. Police said they had all officers out on accident investigation at one time, and three dispatchers in the office were handling incoming calls. When the accident was reported to ponce the followlngday the investigating officer cited Mr. West for iauure to report an accident, and Mrs. Bonnett with failure to control her vehicle. Albert Eugene Tiernan, 53, Offden. suffered facial cuts and bruises and an injured knee in a head-on collision at 1300 S. State He is in satisfactory" condition at Utah Valley Hospital. - Police said the Occident oc curred when Mr. Tiernan's car on the wrong side of the road, collided with another driven by Daniel Boone Evans, 23, Provo, Damage to each vehicle was about $350. Investigation into tne ac cident is being continued, with citation pending. Services Today For Baby Girl Funeral services are schedul ed at 10:30 this morning for Becky Ann Austin, nine-week-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Austin, 1554 S. 800 E. The infant girl was dead on arrival at Utah Valley Hospital Monday night after she stopped breathing in what the family doctor described as a "lightning attack' of pneumonia. The Orem police resuscltator was called to the scene by neighbor and arrived In two min utes, but the parents had already left for the hospital with the baby.
