Gigani Chang Over Orem's revived Tigers will look for their second win of the league season today when they travel to Payson to play the cellar-dwelling Payson Lion9. The Tigers, after a 3-5 Dreseason and a 58-43 loss In their opening game, rolled over Carbon last week, 71-55, amd now appear to be one of the strong contenders for the re gion crown. Payson has lost its first two sanies, 61-50 to Carbon and 58-54 to Springville. Their big-"est big-"est scoring threat is probably Kent Oborn. Spanish Fork clobbered Orem 'n the first game of the league season 58-43. This game found the Tigers hitting only eight foul shots out of 28 attempts a 29 per cent mark. Still, the game was played quite evenly except for the second quarter, when the Dons outscored Orem 21-8. RDean Clark scored 23 ooints for Spanish Fork, while Dale Nelson and Merlin Blad had 10 each. High-jumping champions Dave Henrle also played well for the Dons. Paul Langager led Orem with 13 points. However, the big story for Orem was Robert All-phln, All-phln, who played well enough to gain a starting berth for the Carbon game. Allphin played only the last half of the game but scored 10 points and picked off numerous rebounds. OreHi-QeHeva Zintes Last week, with Allphin starting at forward, the Tigers front line averaged almost 6-4 and it had tremendous rebounding re-bounding power. Brent Howe is the other forward and Dan Gouldlng is the center. Starting slow, Orem and Car bon were tied art 9-9 after the first period. Then the weird' second quarter began. The Din-' ; osaurs got hot all of a sudden, i j j i , y ana scorea nine points in a row to move into an 18-9 lead. "Hmmm," said coach Ber-j dean Jarman. "That Consecu-' tive Point Method thai Car bon's using seems to be work ing. I think I'll try It." So the Tigers started carry-1 ing out his orders and before they had finished they had t i . . i . i t svureu it puiius in a row ipr ar 23-18 lead. The Dinos tied i up 27-27 at half-time, but it was all Orem after that. They broke out for 21 points in the last quarter, their total for the first two quarters. The whole Orem team looked a lot better this game but It was Allphln's bruising work un der the boards that was the big difference. Dan Goulding also played much better, leading the Tigers with 23 points. Paul Langager hit 15 and Allph't 14. The officials also had a good night as the Tigers got 44 free throw attempts, half of them by Gouldlng. FOR SALE Use our ' efficient Carpet Shampooer FREE .with pur chase of Blue Lustre sha-m poo. Moss CD-Utah) CD-Utah) announced Wednesday that the Bureau of Reclamation has withdrawn a proposal to establish a rock auarrv within the Wasatch Mountain State Park. Ha said that the Bureau had writ ten asking a permanent ease ment for location of the quarry. And he sarid that Asst, Secretary Sec-retary of the Interior Kenneth Holum has informed him that present plans call for establishment estab-lishment of the quarry at a more distant point outside the State Park. AC 5-4545 4580 South State, Orem The Utes have been making j cord spoiled for such seeming- righteous sounds over the recent re-cent NCAA probation slapped on them for a year. And in some respects, they have their point. Both the points made in the NCAA charge seem small and picayunish to us as we study them. The Utes claim to have statements and affidavits affi-davits to back their position They claim the basketball player haspaid his debt. Thrf the football player's 26 dollars was a necessity since he had to support an expectant wife. The Utes in other words, are pointing out a fallacy of our modern day laws and rules and regulations . . . we're getting trapped in a morass of unrealistic unreal-istic over-legislated . rules. It's regimentation with all the red tape you could ever find. The Utes generally run a pretty clean shop. That can also be sa'd for the entire Skyline Sky-line conference Only two days before the NCAA announcement, an-nouncement, we had commented comment-ed to a colleague that only once in our recollection had a Skyline school been hit by the NCAA. You've got to draw a line somewhere. There has to be a place beyond which something becomes wrong, or Illegal. Can you allow anyone to step over the line? If so, just how far? The NCAA has a tremendous job in policing our colleges and universities. They have handed out 65 penalties in 10 years. Considering the tremendous tremen-dous amount of recuiting done each year by the great number of athletically inclined schools, it's a wonder there haven't been more. And perhaps there should have been. The NCAA has to rely on reports re-ports from member Institutions and Individuals. In Conclusion It looks like there is little recorse, unless the Utes want to anneal their case: They have already admitted the situations did exist, though they also say they have been corrected. But the Utah basketball team will have to pay the J. C. Gipson, at 29. A 10-year Veteran of Globe Trotters Harlam Globe Trotters Will Make Appearance In Orem -- Feb. I st Six foot eight Inch J. C. Gipson is playing his tenth season with the Harlem Globetrotters, Globe-trotters, basketball's mightiest team which appears Feb. 1 at Orem School against the Honolulu Surfriders. And he's only 29 years o! age"- with plenty of years of great basketball ahead of him. All of which means that J. C. got a real early start as a Trotter. As a matter of face, he joined them right out of Thomas Jefferson High School in his native Los Angeles. : It Isn't often, that the ter-riffic ter-riffic Trotters with applicants each year from top college ranks take a player with only high, school exoerience. But Owner-Coach Abe Saperstein happened to watch the elongated elonga-ted Gip In action in an important import-ant L. A. prep game and was much impressed by what he saw. j So much so that he made it a point to talk to the youth after, the game. When he learned that J.C. would not be going to college as he had to make a living for his family, Abe since by the time investigation investigat-ion is made and the situation thoroughly studied, the offending offend-ing situation or student is usually usu-ally long gone. It's tough. But it's also a fact. ' Northwest Schools Seek Lea?u Affiliation ... They say you must strike while the iron is hot. If so, then now is the time for the 6 members of the Western Athletic Ath-letic Conference to put in their bid for the Northwest school" of Oregon and Oregon State to join up. This week' nealtv for nart mistakes TTfah ' reoorts sav the two Oregon w'll have to tighten un their! schools are investigartlng lea offered him a contract to fol low his graduation. Gipson went on that season, his only one in prep ball, by the way, to win the honor of Los Angeles "Prep Player of the Year." J. C. has been a Globetrotter Globetrot-ter star from the day he joined join-ed them. Not only does hi3 height stand him In . great stead, but he's unusually agile and a good shot. The Califor-nian Califor-nian plays an important part in the Trotters' celebrated comedy stunts and' It's" usually hh voice one hears above the. others. Saperstein is so high on him that he's usually one of the first selected from the great array of talent available to make the trips with units traveling to all parts of the world. Consequently, Gip is as much of a favorite in Hong Kon?, Melbourne, Hungary or Alaska as he is everywhere in the States. . KEEPING-UP got you SH00K-UP?
