Show ORES! - GENEVA TIMES Cost to Students High at Utah Medical School Total ODerating expenses for the four years since the establishment estab-lishment of the University of Utah School of Medicine a- mounted to $852,058, of which $486,305 or 58 came from state appropriations, and $347, 551 or 41 from fees paid by students, the Utah Foundation reported in a study released to day. The University of Utah School of Medicine spent $1,518 per student in 1946-47. Estimated fees and state appropiations provide pro-vide $2,077 per student for the current school year. The Utah foundation report cites a study of 23 state-supported medical schools in the United Unit-ed States which indicates expenditures ex-penditures varying from $1,383 to more than $6,000 per student per year for the 1946-47 school year. Thirteen of the 23 schools spent more than $2,500 per stud-j ent per year. The fee charged medical stud "ents at the University of Utah is $439 per year. The average fee for the 23 state-supported schools in the nation is $301.70 for the 1947-488 school year. Utah's fee is the third highest among the 23 schools. Fees at private schools are generally higher. Nearly one-half million dollars dol-lars was received during the first four years for research Droiects at the University of Utah Medical School from grants made by individuals, foundations, private firms, and others. An additional $350,000 has been committed for the current cur-rent school year. These research grants are not included in computing per student stud-ent costs of the medical school. However, these grants and the research projects which they finance add to the equipment of the school, as well as enabling the school to retain high-ranking instructional personnel, part of whose time is chargeable to the research projects. Medical schools can accommo date only a small part ot the would-be doctors. There were 73,2818 applications filed for 6,233 places in the nation's med ical schools in September, 1947. The Utah medical school received receiv-ed 470 applications for 51 places in the freshman class. Most state-supported schoels, including Utah, give preference to residents of their own states. Forty-five out of 51 students ac- cepted in 1947 are Utah resid ents. Most of the medical students during the war years were en rolled under military training programs, their tuition paid by the Federal government. How' ever, since tuition meets only part of the cost, states having medical schools made a sub stantial contribution for training train-ing medical students from all parts of the country for the armed arm-ed forces, a substantial part of the cost being met from the state appropriations. Wise distrust and constant watchfulness are the parents of sagety. YOUR GAS APPLIANCE STORE 8th North and State Street OREM "Check Your Car, Check Accidents" Is Slogan for May "Check your car . . . check accidents" ac-cidents" is the May slogan of a continuing program aimed at saving lives on the highways of Utah. . "The brakes of your car can mean the difference between life and death," said George H. Lowe, president of the Utah Safety Council. "Lots of people realize that. But, still it's deplor able how many motorists contin ue to drive with poor brakes. Other car parts, too, can be life savers. Lights, windshield wip ers, tires, steering and wheel alignment, the muffler and exhaust ex-haust system, the. glass, rear- view mirror and horn are all important im-portant to safety. The Utah Safety Council is urging all motorists to keen their cars in safe operating con dition as one means of preventing prevent-ing losses from traffic accidents. This project for May is part of tne year-round operation safety program in which several local groups are cooperating with the council as the coordinating a- gency. lhe continuing effort is part of the nation-wide traffic safety education program of the national bafety Council. "Your life and the lives of others may depend on whether or not your car is kept in safe operating condition," Mr. Lowe said. Vehicle defects were con. tributing factors in 18 per cent or ail latal traffic accidents, according ac-cording to reports from state traffic authorities. Yet this figure fig-ure does not tell the whole story. Information on vehicle condition is available in less than half of all reported fatal cases. "So check your car .... eliwk accidents .... and save a life." Annrnvlmitolv 39 ftOft now cases of cancer are diagnosed each year in this country.
