Dick was born on October 4, 1926 in Lehi, Utah and raised in Pleasant Grove, Utah. He retired to Lake County, California in 1977, Dick was a man of integrity and generosity. gen-erosity. He was always willing to lends hand. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Yvonne and children Vicki, Susan and Richard as well as four grandchildren Jim, Ron, Pam and Jennifer and ten great-grandchil- -dren. His great-grandson, Jason, passed way following birth. Dick's surviving siblings are Phyllis, Obituaries Anna-Jane, Ross and Judith. Dick's sister Kathleen preceded him in death. Always proud of being a hard worker, Dick had operated a small business, retired from the Los Altos, California Fire Department Depart-ment as a Battalion Chief and served in the United States Navy during WWII. He enjoyed fishing, crabbing and clamming Dick's State of Nevada trophy trout remains on display, at the Lake Topaz Lodge, in Topaz Lake, NeVada where Dick and Yvonne bi-annuaily vacationed in their beloved be-loved trailer. Verna Caroline Miller Joines Verna Caroline Miller Joines, beloved wife of Lorne Joines, died at home surrounded by her loving family on August Au-gust 4. 2008 in Alpine Utah. Verna was born September Septem-ber 2, 1921 to Matilda Ru-rode Ru-rode and Herman Her-man Miller in Peterson, Iowa. Verna graduated from High School in Iowa with the class of 1939. Her formal education also included a degree in home economics with honors from Iowa State University in 1943. In addition to her academic achievements, Verna was an accomplished ac-complished seamstress, a master of many fine-art crafts and a wonderful won-derful homemaker, mother and grandmother. Her lifelong study and participation in her Chris tian faith and Bible study was consistent with her marry acts of service to her family, friends and neighbors. Verna is survived and greatly missed by her husband of 64 years, Lorne Joines of Alpine Utah, her daughter Janine (Lang) Baker of Sandpoint, Idaho, her son Steven Joines of Bozeman, Montana, her daughter Debra Taggart of Highland, High-land, Utah, seven grandchildren and six, soon to be seven, great grandchildrea She is also survived by her brother Emmett Miller (Joyce) of Des Moines, Iowa. Verna was preceded in death by her parents, brother Donald Miller (Camilla), sister Ruth Jensen (Ward) and brother-in-law Gerald joines (Fila). A memorial service for Verna will be held Saturday, August 23 in Peterson Iowa in St. John's Church where Verna was baptized, bap-tized, confirmed and married. Internment of her ashes will be at Waterman Cemetery in Sutherland, Suther-land, Iowa. Our beloved mother, grandmother, grand-mother, greatrandmother and friend, Lois Anderson Cook, age 91 of Cedar Fort passed away August 7, 2008. She was born July 11, 1917 in Cedar Fort, Utah to Wallace and Mary Berry , Anderson- She was the oldest of four girls. Lois attended school in Cedar Fort and graduated from Lehi High School She married her high school sweetheart, John L Cook in the Salt Lake Temple. They made their home in Cedar Fort where they raised three children, Wally, Melvyn and Marlene. She retired from Tooele Army Depot after 30 years of service. Lois was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Latter-day Saints, serving in many ward and stake callings. She has contributed con-tributed much to the successful functions in Cedar Fort, both civic and religious. For many years she originated plays and programs so the Primary children could have the experience of participation in such events. She would spend countless hours in a very cold gym rehearsing and directing the youth of Cedar Fort. Costumes, plays and scenery made only part of her contributions. Lois was loved and respected by all who knew her, she loved her family and enjoyed her kids, grandkids and great -grandkids very much. Lois is survived by her daughter-in-law, Sharon Cook, daughter, daugh-ter, Marlene (Duane) Allen, son, Melvyn Cook, all of Cedar Fort; 6 grandchildrea 16 great -grandchildrea sister Ora Petersen, American Ameri-can Fork and brother-in-law, Doug Peterson, Cedar Fort. Preceded in death by husband, John L Cook, son, Wally Cook, grandsoa Wade Cook, two sisters, Verda Peterson and Reva Biackhurst. Special thanks for the loving and caring staff at Greenwood Manor, nurses, Pam and Mary Jean from Applegate Hospice and everyone who helped care for her in any way. Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 13, 2008 at the Cedar Fort LDS Chapel at 1100 am Family and friends called Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at Wing Mortuary, 118 E Main, Lehi, from 6-8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to service on Wednesday Wednes-day at the church. AARP driver safety The AARP is sponsoring its Driver Safety Course on Sept. 17 and 18 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Orem Senior Friendship Center. Cen-ter. The class runs two days and attendance is required for both days for class credit. The f 10 fee covers supplies. Registration Reg-istration is being taken at the center and there is a 20-stu-dent limit for the class. Trips and Tours Seniors are allowed only to sign up for themselves and a spouse or a senior -aged friend. Current Cur-rent Orem Senior Friendship Center memberships are required re-quired for all participants on the tours. Sign-ups for September tours will be taken through August. Au-gust. Those tours are: I Sept. 6 Greek Festival in Salt Lake City costs $5 and the bus leaves at 920 a.m. I Sept. 10 Wendover Turn-Around Turn-Around costs $8 and leaves at Sam I Sept. 15 "Rockrollers and Pancakes" at the Valley Center Playhouse in Lindon has the bus leaving the Friendship Center Cen-ter at 7 p.m. Cost is $5. November tour A five day trip is planned Nov. 3-7 for Laughlin, Nev. Cost is $230 for each person, single occupancy or $170 per person for a double occupancy (sign up together). The bus will leave by 8 a.m. from the center. More information informa-tion is available at the center. Community dance The Saturday Sat-urday night community dance will feature Walt Gregory for entertainment. Cost for admission admis-sion is $5 per person and the dance is from 8-11 p.m. Meals on Wheels Mountainland Moun-tainland Association of Governments Gov-ernments can provide a hot, nutritious meal to those seniors who are homebound as well. Call 229-3802 to be placed on the delivery list. luncheons The Utah County Security Center prepares meals for Orem Senior Friendship Center. Cen-ter. Meals are suitable for persons with diabetes, heart disease and hypertension. A list of the number of carbohydrates carbohy-drates in each food item on the menu can be made available so that diabetics can make an informed choice of what they will eat based on their own in- dividual requirements. The suggested donation for the meal is still $2 for 60-plus seniors and $4.90 for those 59 years old and younger. The suggested donation for salads, sal-ads, which are still available when pre-ordered, is $2.25 for seniors and $5.65 for those 59 or younger.
