A pair of Utah Valley teenagers teen-agers Morgan Oxborrow of Lehj and Hershel Kelly of Highland took the floor for their respective teams in the tournament. The Lehi graduate won two national youth gdalballcham-pionships gdalballcham-pionships on Utah's girls team in 2005 and 2006, and has now moved up to the next level. "I've been playing since I was seven," Oxborrow explained. ex-plained. "It's really intense. You can't see, so you have to hear everything. It's about all different senses, plus it's all about the mental aspect." Kelly, on the other hand, had never played the sport at all until the last few months. I Owlz rally again to take down rival Ogden on Saturday: the Ogden Raptors have done one thing right in four of the first five games of their season-opening season-opening series against the Orem Owlz: score first. However, the Raptors have failed to do two major things in the five losses to the Owlz: keep scoring and play defense. The Raptors have drawn first blood in four consecutive games in the series with their cross-town rivals, but have surrendered the lead in each of those. Making matters worse is the fact that Ogden's defense has committed 11 errors in the five games against Orem. That has allowed Orem to comeback with ease in all five games, in technology has lead to the most promising non-surgical disc treatment today. "The men's team heard I was playing so they came down and showed me what men's goalball was. Lots of it was about speed and communication. com-munication. The gameplay is faster arid you have to be paying pay-ing attention to where the ball is at aD times. It's intense and you have to use a lot of strategy." Jepson said that both players play-ers have their individual strengths and have become great additions to their respective respec-tive squads. "They are such great kids," the coach explained. "Morgan has been playing with us for maybe 10 years since she was a cute little thing. She has so much desire and she is really, really good. She plays hard, works hard, has a good throw, cluding Saturday's 8-7 victory. Ogden made its presence felt early again, this time behind a powerful two-run homer from Kyle Russell and a two-run single sin-gle from Matt Wallach to give the Raptors the early 4-0 lead. "That's a team (Ogden) you will see get better and better," Owlz manager Tom Kotchman said. "They are missing some key draft picks who are still tied up in other leagues and the College World Series. We have just about everybody here who's supposed to be here." After falling into a four-run first inning deficit, Orem's bats got hot. The Owlz, who entered the night with a Pioneer League-leading League-leading .331 team batting average, aver-age, exploded for 12 hits Saturday Satur-day night to add to their grand total of 66 hits through the first five games of the season. Orem sent rookie Kyle Hurst to the mound in his first professional profes-sional start since becoming the 36th pick of the Anaheim Angels An-gels in this year's draft. Hurst, who is the son of legendary Boston Red Sox pitcher Bruce Hurst, lasted only 2 innings before being lifted. "He did OK," Kotchman said of Hurst's debut. tHe didn't have his real good stuff." I'm so glad that he has become a part of our team. He's only been playing with us for six months and that's because ' . he's been losing his vision. He hasn't had a lot of experience but he has picked up really quickly how to play." Kelly's eyesight has degenerated degen-erated over the last few years, so he has had the chance to play other sports. He says that he loves the opportunities presented pre-sented by goalball. "I played baseball when I was 13 and I stopped playing play-ing because I kept getting knocked out," he said. "I was in the outfield and I see mul straight on Friday: the Ogden Raptors are having a hard time catching a break. Emphasis on the word "catch," since defense is what the Raptors are having the hardest time with early in the Pioneer League season. The Raptors have committed com-mitted eight errors through their first four games, including includ-ing four Thursday in their Lindquist Field opener. Ogden was only charged with one error in Friday's 7-2 loss to Orem, but twice the Raptors Rap-tors had runners picked off, only to see them end up safe at the bag because of dropped balls. Another wild play allowed Orem's Ivan Contreras to score the go-ahead run all the way from first base on a bunt in the seventh inning after the Raptors Rap-tors had tied it in the sixth on DH Jesse Mier's RBI single. "That one inning, it got kind of unraveled on us," Raptors manager Mike Brumley said. "That play got out of hand, but overall it was a pretty good ballgame. We're swinging the bats all right, we've just got to put together a few hits in the same inning." Although the young man from Highland is still picking up the nuances of the game, he has the advantage of learning from one of the best players in the world Pararympian and Bingham Bing-ham High grad Chris Dodds. "Dodds has kind of taken Hershel under his wing," Jepson said. "He's spent a lot of time working with him in training and outside of practice. It's so much fun to see Hershel developing as a player." Both players believe that having the national competition competi-tion is a great opportunity for the sport in the state. "It's so crazy," Oxborrow said. "We've never had nationals nation-als here. States from all over the country come to compete. I think we've done a good job though. It's unlike anything else. Y ou start and work so hard to come to these and then it's like, wow. It's fun." But it also means some added pressure for the local teams. "It's kind of intimidating," Kelly explained. "We've got to win. This is our turf. But it's fun and a good experience, and I'm glad I have the chance to participate." fireworks, but the Ogden Raptors didn't get what they wanted in their home opener. Orem's Ryan Groth went 4-for-fi and Dwayne Bailey scored the first four times he came to bat as the Owlz beat Ogden 11-6 Thursday to open the season with their third consecutive con-secutive win over their rivals. Poor fielding by Ogden helped the Owlz break open a tie ballgame with two runs in the sixth and five more in the seventh after the Raptors had taken an early lead. Groth had a pair of doubles and four RBI while raising his average to .545 and Bailey went 3-for-5 and drove in two to go with his round-trip trav eling. Kyle Orr and Pedro Baez led the Raptors with two hits apiece. While it's early in the Pioneer Pio-neer League season, Ogden has to be anxious to turn around its fortunes against in-state rival Orem as Ogden manager Mike Brumley, a former for-mer Salt Lake Stingers skipper, skip-per, is still looking for his first win with the Dodgers' rookie league affiliate. I Castillo's sizzling start helps Owlz beat Raptors: so far this season, the Ogden Raptors haven't figured out how to get Angel Castillo out. On Wednesday night, he hit two home runs and went 4-for-5 with to help Orem improve to 2-0 on the year with a convincing con-vincing 13-3 win over Ogden. "It's only two games, but the first two games have been impressive," im-pressive," said Orem manager Tom Kotchman. "He reminds me of a kid who played here in 2002 named Warner Madrigal. "It was a lot of fastballs, but the last two at -bats was a lot of off-speed pitches," Castillo said through an interpreter. "This is the best start he's had in his short career.
