About this time each year, overcrowded beehives divide themselves roughly in half. Up to 30,000 bees and the old queen take off to look for a new home, traveling as one massive swarm for as far as four miles. A new queen and her drones stay behind in the established hive. The swarm, a small but noisy cloud that becomes a hanging volleyball of bees when the insects in-sects stop to rest, can frighten unsuspecting homeowners, said Adrian Hinton of the local office of the USU Extension Service. But rather than be scared, Hinton said he hopes those who happen upon a swarm will give him a call. '- ... g . MARIO RUIZDaily Herald Greg Ferguson, left, handles a rack of bees from a hive on his orchard in Orem as Adrian Hinton of Utah State University Service Extension observes the bees. Thanks to an infestation of hornets and mites that destroyed de-stroyed up to one-third of all hives in the county last fall, Utah Valley is actually low on bees, he said. And without bees, the trees, vegetable gardens, flowers and fields will not be properly pollinated, pol-linated, he said. Greg Ferguson, owner of a peach orchard in Orem, started his first hive of bees three years ago and now has almost a dozen doz-en boxes of the insects, which ensure pollination of his fruit trees and garden. Last spring, he collected two or three swarms from his own property. "Just as well put them to work," he said. "We give them a box, and they say this is home and they stay there. You get a lot of honey from them and it makes good Christmas presents." There are about a hundred beekeepers like Ferguson in Utah County and there Ls always a demand for new swarms, Hinton said. Swarms generally occur twice a year, from the second week of May to the end of May, MARIO RUIZ, Daily Ht-'idkl Adrian Hinton of Utah State University Service Extension points to different areas of a beehive rack on Greg Ferguson's orchard in Orem. Thousands of bees will he out looking for new hives and Hinton instructs valley residents to notify proper beekeepers when encountering a swarm. and two weeks in July starting on July 4. "If people will let us know when they see a swarm, then me or another master gardener will come and collect them," he said. "We put them in a box and give them to beekeepers or use them to teach." Bees generally emerge from their hive during daylight hours and temperatures of 45 degrees or above, he said. When a swarm emerges from a hive, "5 percent or less are out scouting for new locations like a box or a tree with a cavern in it or a cool place," he said. "They don't like to be heated in the summer." To report a bee swarm to the Utah County Office of the USU Extension Service, call 851-8460. ext. 0.
