(L-R): Ron Smart, LaVorn Sparks, UVSC President Kerry D. Romes-burg, Romes-burg, Richard Shipman, president of Pro Air Services, and Gary Wixom. UVSC's aviation program receives donation Utah Valley State College's aviation science program recently recent-ly received a significant donation from Pro Air Services and its president, Richard Shipman. The gift included $5,000 as well as acquiring a Merlin IIB turbo prop aircraft through an exchange ex-change program. The new plane will have numerous benefits to UVSC's pilots-in-training, including in-cluding pressurization, an airline-type cockpit, high altitude capability, deluxe passenger seating, faster speed, and lower direct opera ting cost, accordingto Dr. Ron Smart, director of the aviation science program. "We appreciate people in this community and we applaud Richard Shipman's efforts. Without contributions and assistance, assis-tance, we could not continue this caliber of training," said Smart. The school traded a Skyvan cargo hauler acquired in 1993 for the Merlin, which also has all-weather all-weather capabilities and turbine engines. As students are trained on the Merlin, they will be more ready and qualified to certify for various pilot's licenses. The money will be used initially ini-tially to train student pilots on the Merlin. "Donations make it possible to help students so they have a chance for training required for any job in aviation," said Smart. "UVSC's program is very complete, com-plete, and having the Provo air National Small Business Person of the Year to speak at Chamber forum Salt Lake businesswoman and National Small Business Person of the Year, Lorraine Miller, will address members of the ProvoOrem Chamber of Commerce at a luncheon on Friday, August 5, at noon at the Provo Park Hotel. Miller, owner of Cactus & Tropicals of Utah, was chosen for the award by a jury selected by U.S. Small Business Administration staff in Washington, D.C. The award was presented by the president presi-dent of the United States at a White House ceremony on April 8. Miller is the third woman to win the award in its 31-year history. his-tory. She opened her first plant store in 1975, and today owns Cactus & Tropicals, a million-dol-lar-a-year business located at 2715 S. 2000 E. in Salt Lake City. Small business owners from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Guam were among those competing compet-ing for the award. Candidates are nominated for the state small business person honors each year by chambers of commerce, trade associations, and other business-oriented business-oriented groups. Any business with less than 500 employees is eligible. Several businesses from Utah Valley were nominated for the state award. "Most business in Utah Valley is considered small business," said Dr. Ian Wilson, chair of the chamber economic development council. "The area is a hotbed for entrepreneurism." Wilson added that ProvoOrem was recently recognized as one of the nation's top locations for home-based business. In addition, addi-tion, a majority of the more than 230 high tech firms located in Utah County were started here. The chamber invites small business owners, all chamber , members, and the public to hear Miller share how she has built port so close opens a gateway to the city for major corporations looking to move into new areas; most Fortune 500 companies own their own airplanes. The opportunities oppor-tunities for growth are tremendous tremen-dous for the community, UVSC, and its students," Shipman said. UVSC's aviation program has grown from four students in 1991 to 256 students this year, Smart said. "An increase in students is a positive sign that the community com-munity is realizing the demand for new, well-trained pilots," he said. The need for pilots is increasing increas-ing due to two factors: first, the number of passengers will double to one billion annually in the next 10-15 years. 'The demand is increasing in-creasing for people to get places quickly. All the major airlines are expanding and needing new pilots to fly their new planes," Shipman said. Second, current pilots are reaching the age of retirement. "Currently, those pilots who were trained during the Korean War era are retiring. In the next ten to 12 years, pilots trained during Vietnam will retire. And there is not a big influx of pilots being trained in the military," Shipman said. Pro Air Services specializes in professional aircraft sales, consulting, con-sulting, and pilot services. They have offices in Provo and Salt Lake City. one of the nation's most successful success-ful small businesses. Cost of the luncheon is $10 for chamber members, $11 to the public.
