Fourteen Orem business houses hous-es are going to contribute services ser-vices and merchandise totaling 9100.00 to the lucky child and its parents. Parents of the winning child must reside in Orem and the baby ba-by must be born in this area to be eligible for the many gifts that will be bestowed. The arrival time of the winner will be that which is so recorded on the county records as certified certi-fied by the attending physician. The contest, of course, opens midnight on Dec. 31 and a lively oatest may be in the offing. Telephone Company Adds New Orem-Provo Lines Thirty additional trunk lines connecting Orem and Provo have been installed by the Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph company during recent re-cent weeks, according to John W. Snell, distrct manager. j The lines were made possible ( by the recent installation of four miles of lead-covered cable be- tween 12th North Street and the .Orem central office, the district manager said. "These additional trunk lines were originally scheduled for completion about the first of the year," Mr. Snell stated, "but we were successful in placing them in operation about one week early in order that they would be available for the peak holiday calling." Previously there were 40 trunk lines in operation between the two officers; these new additions ad-ditions bring the present total to 70A Special equipment has also been installed in both offices which will make possible greater operating efficiency and improved improv-ed service to the subscribers on inter-office and long distance calling. Now each operator in either office will know which line is ready for use simply by glancing at the switchboard. Before Be-fore this automatic equipment was provided, it was necessary for the operator to test several lines to locate one not in use. Another improvement in connection con-nection with the 70 trunk lines is the provision of automatic sig naling from one office to another as contrasted to the previous arrangement ar-rangement where the operator was required to signal the other office by operating a manual key. Deadline Nears For Orem DSA Nominations Nominations of 'a candidate for the annual Jaycee Distinguished Service Award for 1952 will clo se midnight Monday, Jan. S it was announced today by Weston Kofford, Jaycee chairman of the DSA committee. The award is made by the Or em Jaycees to pay honor to the young man in Orem between the ages of 21 and 35 who has contributed con-tributed most to the community during the past year. Six judges have been named to select the DSA winner, but their names will not be known until after the award has been made at the "Man of the Year" banquet to be held at the Crown Lounge Jan. 14. ' f . 4 ; lVt ! t 5 ft Auxiliary Police To Hold Clinic Members of the Orem Auxiliary Auxili-ary Police and persons interested interest-ed in that organization are urged to aitend an instructive meeting Monday night at the Orem National Na-tional Guard Headquarters building build-ing (next door to Utah Hardware Hard-ware and Implement Co.) at 8 p.m. Highlights of the meeting will include a short instruction period per-iod on a phase of law enforcement enforce-ment to be given by Chief of tPo-8ice tPo-8ice Arthur Henderson; remarks by George McKinney, Orem Civil defense director, who will show a civil defense film; and a target practice for both rifle and pistol. ARMY VETERAN RETURNS FROM KOREA Melvn Blair, former Orem resident, re-sident, recently returned to Utah Ut-ah after serving one year with the army in Korea. Melvin plans to make his home with his wife and daughter at Clearfield, Utah, where he will be employed. On Christmas day Melvin and his family paid a brief visit to his brother, Merril Blair, and his family at Orem. Mr. and Mrs. James T. Bl ake of Vineyard were hosts to a turkey dinner Tuesday at their home in Vineyard. Week of March 27 j Funeral services were held for Sl. ... mn New Dry Cleaning Plant Opens Here After several weeks of remod eling and installation of new equipment, the opening of Coll-ns-Cleaners, Orem's newest dry cleaning establishment, is announced ann-ounced today by Jack Collins, manager. The new dry cleaning firm is located at 365 South State, adjacent ad-jacent to Ollie's Market (formerly (form-erly Sawaya's Market). Latest automatic equipment has been lntatled , at the plant which will provide 24 hour odorless-free dry cleaning service and two hour service in the event ev-ent of an emergency, Mr. Collin-stated. Collin-stated. The dry cleaning equipment equip-ment will rank the local plant with the finest in the state, Collins Coll-ins said. In addition to dry cleaning, other services featured at the plant will include water repelent service, alterations, free moth proofing, pressing and hats cleaned clean-ed and blocked. Mr. Collins comes to Orem from Provo where he was associated associ-ated with Modern Cleaners for the past nine years. Frank Buffo of Lincoln was Semaphore Slatid for Fourth North; Council Eyes Pay r Hike for: City Employees Installation of another traffic semaphore to be located in one of Orem's most congested traffic in-tersectons, in-tersectons, 4th North and State, was assured this week following follow-ing an agreement made Monday night between Orem City officials offi-cials and the Utah State Road Commission. Members of the Orem City Council, Co-uncil, Chief of Police and the City Recorder signed contracts Monday night at the city council meeting, paving the way for the erection of the semaphore within 30 days. The contracts provide that the road commission will furnish the traffic light while Orem City will pay for the installation and maintain the semaphore. The semaphore, however, will be different than other traffic lights in Orem. The new signal is tabled as a semi vehicle and pedestrian actuated traffic signal. sig-nal. The light will be controlled by traffic entering State Street Physical Exam To Be Required of All Food Handlers The City County Board of Health has made it mandatory that, beginning Jan. 1, 1953, all food handlers working in restau rants, makerts, milk plants, soft drink establishments and beer parlors, confectionary stores, bakeries, bottling plants, candy factories, school lunches and ice cream or frozen dessert establish ments will be required to have a physical examination. This is one phase of the program to insure in-sure safe handling of food and drink. All food and drink establishments establish-ments will be inspected regularly regular-ly once a month and at that time, inspectors will insist that all food handlers have their health cards available. The health board is urging that employers insist on all food handlers hand-lers getting their axamination at once. Examinations may be obtained ob-tained from family physicians in the area where employees work. Family physicians have been supplied sup-plied with food handler examination exam-ination forms. When these are completed they should be mailed at once to the City County Health Department, Room 311, City and County Building, Provo. A food handlers health card will be mailed to each employee so examined. exa-mined. This examination will be required yearly. The Department of Health also requests that all food handlers be sure to have chest X-Rays when the State Mobile Unit is in your area. named president of the Alpine Educational association. Week of April 24 Hosts to the annual spring convention of Timpanogos First District Federated Women's clubs cl-ubs were the Orem Women's club and the Orem Literary club. The convention was held at the Vermont-Orem First ward chap el. Fenton Prince was named principal prin-cipal for the new Westmore School. Dorothy Lunceford enlisted, in the Women's Air Force. from the east and west. When no traffic enters from these two directions the light will remain green. Pedestrians will also be able to control the traffic light by virtue vir-tue of an electrical push button mechanism. Recommendations for a sema' phore at 4th North and State Street were first made more than a year ago by the city council, coun-cil, Orem Safety Council, police department, local merchants and many private residents. Pay Hike Recommended Cost of living pay increases for all city employees was one of the chief items discussed by the city council Monday night. Although no action was taken, the council recommended a blanket blan-ket 10 per cent pay increase for all employees with one or two exceptions where some adjustments adjust-ments may be necessary due to previous salary arrangements.. The council is expected to pass upon the recommendations within with-in the next two weeks at which time the increased pay will be retroactive to Jan. 1, 1953. . Last cost of living pay increase granted on a blanket basis for Orem City employees was in Jan. of 1951. Water Improvements Recommendations to the council coun-cil for new and better water policies pol-icies and practices designed to improve the administration of Orem culinary water was made by Ted Calder, ctiy treasurer. Water rates, discontinuing of water bill discounts, better maintenance main-tenance of water meters that are out of order, and other problems were airea. Mr. calder gave a statistical report on the various water services to give the council a better insight as to what Improvements Im-provements could be made. 4 It was decided that a complete study of the recommendations and the legal issues involved should be made by CouncHmen Ray Loveless and Howard Hall of the water department, Mr. Calder, and City Attorney Hugh Vera WenU.
