TEE KOHIM STATES TELEPEOXE t TELEGRAPH C0. ALPHA. MICH. Lest than two yean ago, in October, 1943, survey on discovered that a swamp area 28 mile northwest of Iron Mountain, Moun-tain, Mich., concealed one of the richest deposits of iron ore in the upper peninsula. Tests of orej samples brought up from 40 feet be- J low the marsh surface showed very . high quality, the kind of ore ur-, gently needed in our production of' war materials, sayf the Milwaukee , Journal. i The first job in getting at this1 rich iron deposit was to drain the marsh and strip away the 30 to 40 foot deep surface strata of rock and j soil This was the start in the de- j velopment of the Book mine by the j North Range Mining company. The stripping was used at fill for ; truck roads, railroad siding and a stockpile base. After about 10 months of intensive effort by a large crew of workmen, the area bad been excavated to the depth of the ore deposit, and in July of 1943 actual operation of the new open pit mine got under way. Prediction Rising. With a crew of 80 men, recruited from the near-by towns of Alpha, Crystal Falls, Iron River and Iron Mountain, the North Range Mining company started a steadily increasing increas-ing flow of this rich ore toward the teel mills. A big steam shovel ate its way into the ore at the rate of 240 tons a day. Forty railroad ore can day rolled down the spur line to Escanaba to dump their load into the big ore boats headed for Cleveland, where the ore goes into the building of tanks and other vital war equipment requiring this high quality of ore. In Its first six months of opera don the Book mine produced 291,000 tone of ore. Thus far in 1944 It has produced 813,920 tons for shipment and additional thousands of tone which have been stockpiled for future shipment Today the huge pit, a quarter mile across, yawns 170 feet deep where less than two years ago was desolate swampland. Circling up from the bottom a narrow ledge forms the only roadway out of the pit and over this trucks haul 11 ton loads of ore to the crusher at the edge of the pit From the crusher the ore runs down the conveyor into the ore cars. Ore Very Hard. The trucks hauling the ore out of the pit are specially built for the job. When they are received at the mine, Lee Sutton, master mechanic. and his assistants make several changes In the trucks in order to condition them for the tremendous abuse to which they are subjected. The mining company maintains complete machine shop for this purpose. The trucks are built with reversi ble seats and the same speeds tor both reverse and forward opera Hon. This Is because they cannot be turned around they are run for ward out of the pit with their loads of ore, then are backed down the mile long ledge roadway for the next load. The ore from the Book mine is so hard that the points on the pow er shovel wear down every 16 hours and have to be replaced. Two weld- en are kept busy repairing shovel points. During the summer months the mine operates on two eight-hour shifts. In the winter months it is operated op-erated continuously on three eight-hour eight-hour shifts. This is because equipment equip-ment would freeze up from the intense in-tense cold if it were not kept in constant con-stant operation. A complete laboratory is also maintained for the Book mine, since samples must be run on every car of ore shipped to determine that it measures up to the high quality required. Of the nation's total of more than 23,500 veterans, who were given civil service appointments during the month of September, 547 joined federal payrolls la the Rocky Mountain states, according ac-cording to C. L. Edwards, Director Direc-tor of the 13th U. S. Civil Service Serv-ice -Regian. Service men and women from World War H made up more than 86 percent of the placements place-ments in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming, and the appointments ap-pointments of 8 wives or widows of veterans were recorded. Throughout the United States, 157,759 veterans found government govern-ment jobs during the first nine months of 1945, and in the same period, 4,882 were appointed to duty in the 13th Region.
