Show THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 16 Volume V, Issue VIII February 1, 2002 Eden Artist Creates Unique Pieces By Janet Hoffmann Have you ever seen a painted saw? If you have, you probably know Elise She said her first commissioned paintings started when she was around ten years old. Her friend’s parents would also ask her to paint certain Elise Summers with one of her artwork pieces. Summers. Elise paints on anything that will hold paint— milk cans, saws, shovels, leather, walls, plates, etc. Around 1990 she entered a painted saw in the Weber County Fair and received the honor of best of the show. Later in 1992, she entered a mural on a milk can and once again took Best of the Show. She went on to receive 1st Place at the state fair. This unique way of painting has caused problems for her because, in the “Art World,” she can’t enter these paintings in “Art shows” because they consider her work a craft because it doesn’t fit in a frame. In the past, most of her work has been commissioned but she is hoping to choose what she wants to paint and then, if her choices are framed she could enter an art show. When asked what helped her to be the painter she is today she said, “Practice, time, and imagination.” Every Christmas she paints manger scenes for her church, or adds to the one they still have. Her pictures seem to have a life of their own, and it’s a life that is very inviting—I can understand why she is commissioned to paint. things for them. She had a talent at an early age, and it has continued to develop. Elise grew up in Wilson—now West Haven, attended Weber High where she took art classes from Steve Songer and Dick Brown. This is where she met her husband Tom. She said she knew she loved him when she let him paint on one of her painting. After they were married, Tom brought her to the Valley where they have lived for the last 24 years. Elise helps her husband with S & S Excavating, and also works for Eden water. This keeps her from her painting, but added that they just hired someone to help at S&S to give her more time for painting. Janet Thompson hired Elise to paint a picture on a piece of leather for her saddle-maker husband, Glen. The leather piece is stretched with leather cords to a branch frame. The brilliant colors in the picture helped me understand what Elise tried to explain earlier—“I like to take something flat with no dimension and turn it into something you could walk into and get lost.” The saddle-maker painting did that to me. One look and you didn’t want to leave the heaven she created with her brush. With all of the exquisite detail, I found myself wanting to melt into the picture and enjoy the beauty she had created. Gale and Marge Armstrong also “Old West Welcome Home Dinner” To Honor Ogden Olympian Tom Welch An “Old West Welcome Home Dinner” and reception will be held at Rainbow Gardens and The Greenery Restaurant on Tuesday, February 5 to honor Ogden Olympian Tom Welch. Happy Valentines Day Elise Summers’unique and beautiful artwork. hired her to paint wall murals in their home. The scenes depict the llamas that the Armstrongs have raised. At their home, Gale greeted Elise with, “Hello Mike (a nickname for Michelangelo). Elisa’s dream was to be a painter like Leonardo da Vinci. She will just have to settle for Michelangelo. Elise hopes to take art classes in the future to learn new techniques. Her daughter Sadee taught her to use Prisma colored pencils. Elise said she doesn’t remember when she started to paint. According to her family, it’s always been a part of her. Her mother stated that she loved to draw since she was old enough to hold a pencil. Elise says, “I like my painting even if no one else does!” From the artwork I saw, and the happy customers I talked with, I doubt she will ever have to worry about that.
