Show Page 20 THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Volume V, Issue I October 15, 2001 Autumn and Christmas Concerts Announced by OSBA and Utah Opera The Ogden Symphony Ballet Association announces the first concert in the Chamber Series with a concert, followed by a “first-ever” event—the fulllength performance of the Utah Opera’s Carmen. November brings the magic and charm with the Children’s Dance Theatre and the perennial Holiday favorite, The Nutcracker. On Friday, October 19, Utah Symphony Musical Director Keith Lockhart leads the Chamber Orchestra in a program entitled “The Best of the Brits” featuring the 1989 Young Concert Artist Award winner, violinist Scott St. John. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the historic Peery Egyptian Theatre located at 2415 Washington Boulevard. St. John has a special passion for Twentieth Century music, and was Lockhart’s choice for the American premiere of Peter Maxwell Davies’A Spell for Green Corn, a selection he will be playing in this concert. Completing the program will be Britten’s Suite on English Folk Tunes, Op. 90 (A Time There Was . . . ), Holst’s Lyric Movement for Viola and Small Orchestra, and Haydn’s Symphony No. 104 in D Major (London). Ticket prices are $16.00 and $20.00 and may be purchased at the OSBA ticket office at 638 East 26th Street, by calling 399-9214, or one hour prior to performance at the Peery Egyptian Box Office. Students with a valid ID can purchase tickets for $5.00 one hour prior to performance at the Box Office. The Junior E. and Blanche B. Rich Foundation is the sponsor for this concert. The Ogden Opera Guild, Utah Opera Company, and OSBA are excited to copresent the best loved of operas, Bizet’s Carmen on October 30, at the Browning Center. The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. Prior to the performance, the Ogden Opera Guild will host a dinner at the Ogden Country Club for donors of $2,500 or more, and a reception at the ECAC for donors of $500 – $2499. Although a miserable failure at its premiere in 1875 at the Paris Opera, Carmen is now a universal favorite. The flamboyant charm of the gypsy cigarette girl, Carmen, and her heartless seduction of Don Jose combine with the vivid romance of Old Spain with all its color, dance, and spectacle. Ticket prices are $55.00 - $ 15.00, and may be purchased at the OSBA ticket office at 638 East 26th Street, by calling 399-9214, or one hour prior to performance at the Browning Center Box Office. The Stewart Education Foundation and the Ogden Opera Guild are the sponsors for this production. The Family Series opens November 2 at the Browning Center, featuring 240 young dancers, ages 8 to 18, from the Children’s Dance Theatre’s production of Crumb and the Pirates. Two free school performances will be offered to local students prior to the public performance that evening at 7:00 p.m. Crumb lives in the tiny Italian village of Napoli de Pezcadore where times are hard. Once a proud community of great fisherman, now, day after day, the fishermen take to the sea, only to return empty handed. One night, a mysterious old man appears to Crumb and instructs him to “take to the sea, cast in your line, and put an end to this curse.” What follows is a rambunctious tale of flying fish, scruffy pirates, worm-chasing sea gulls, and dancing pastas! Join Crumb, his loyal dog Max, mother Marie, and all the villagers in this joyous romp about a young man’s journey to adulthood. Ticket prices are $ 12.00 for adults and $ 6.00 for those under age 16. A special family pass admits up to six family members for only $30.00. Tickets may be purchased at the OSBA ticket office at 638 East 26th Street, by calling 399-9214, or one hour prior to performance at the Browning Center Box Office. Drs. Richard and Jean Miller, the Stewart Education Foundation, and the Utah Arts Council are sponsors of this performance. What would the Holidays be without The Nutcracker? Ballet West’s enchanting production has been delighting audiences of all ages for decades. With new costumes and sets, the charming story of young Clara’s Christmas Eve dream transports audiences to the amazing land of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her handsome Cavalier following a battle between the Mouse King and the Nutcracker. Dancing snowflakes welcome Clara and the Nutcracker (who has turned into a dazzling Prince). From there, they travel to the Land of Sweets to be royally entertained by an array of dancers from exotic places. Ticket prices are $19.00 - $27.00 for adults and $14.00 - $ 22.00 for children up to age 16, and may be purchased at the OSBA ticket office at 638 East 26th Street, by calling 399-9214, or one hour prior to performance at the Browning Center Box Office. Call early—these performances sell out early! This performance is made possible through a generous donation from the Stewart Educational Foundation. December brings the first Pops Concert of the 2001 – 2002 Season, when Kory Katseanes leads the orchestra and Utah Symphony Chorus in a performance featuring musical legend Glenn Yarbrough in Michael McLean’s The Forgotten Christmas Carols. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Val A. Browning Center. Yarbrough began his career as lead tenor for the Limelighters, then went on to a solo career that has resulted in over 60 albums and thousands of fans worldwide. An avid sailor, Yarbrough has logged over 60,000 nautical miles, and lives by the motto, “In sailing, as in life, it’s the journey, not the destination that counts.” Michael McLean began his musical career with piano lessons, and by age 11, was writing lyrics and music of his own. He found his niche in award-winning television and radio commercials, then branched out as a performer, producer, director and songwriter. Other well known works include Mr. Krueger’s Christmas with Jimmy Stewart, and Nora’s Christmas Gift with Celeste Holm. The Forgotten Carols tells the story of an older gentleman who believes he witnessed the birth of Christ in Bethlehem. John is convinced he has brought through the centuries “forgotten” carols about characters in the Christmas story whom are overlooked or ignored—the Innkeeper, Mary’s husband, Joseph, and a child angel with an amazing gift of song. Adapted by McLean as a stage performance for Glenn Yarbrough, the message of hope and glory comes to life— something we will appreciate in a different way as we observe our first Holiday Season following the events of September 11. Ticket prices are $18.00 - $26.00 for adults, and may be purchased at the OSBA ticket office at 638 East 26th Street, by calling 399-9214, or one hour prior to performance at the Browning Center Box Office. Aspecial student price of $5.00 per ticket is offered one hour prior to performance. Call early—these performances also sell out early! John A. and Telitha E. Lindquist, lifetime supporters of the OSBA, are the sponsors for this Holiday concert.
