Letters to the Editor Taking the “Ion” Out of Zion . . . Zzzzzzz . . . A Wake-up Call to Action Have you ever looked up in awe at the looming Wasatch Range and wondered what Salt Lake City would be like if an earthquake knocked them as flat as the Kansas plains? Would life in Salt Lake be worth living? Sure, there would still be saltwater taffy, a neatly laid out grid city, and plenty of Mormon crickets. But, just think of what we take for granted that the mighty Wasatch provides. From clean water, to solace from our urban sores, everything from the tall spruces to the bare granite, all of it is worth celebrating. But more importantly, it’s worth protecting! Now is the time to do your part and insist that the Wasatch is protected for the next 15 years. Use the same vigor that you ski the bumps, climb the cracks, or ascend your favorite summits in the Wasatch to scribble your comments to the Forest Service. Plead for more wilderness, cleaner water, and effective strategies to manage a population that will double in size The deadline for material for the November 1, issue is October 24, 2001. before the next planning period ends. The deadline is November 1. Get your voice heard before the developers, ATV enthusiasts, loggers, miners, and helicopter skiers find a receptive ear. Gavin Noyes Red Rock Comments On Editorial I would like to address a few inaccuracies and creations in a recent letter to the editor. Weber County did not issue a mass gathering permit to the Red Rock Ranch. The permit was issued to the promoters—Rolling Summer Concert. This “so called music festival,” I would have to agree, is not my type of music either. However, the people who paid to go to this concert do like this type of music and, in fact, there were many people from all around our nation here. It is within their rights to listen to this “so called music,” as it is mine to listen to country. The music they like does not make them wrong, or you right. There were a total of 14 arrests— eight for controlled substance violations, four for disorderly conduct, one for public intoxication, and one for public lewdness. The eight arrests for possession a controlled substance were cumulative of all drugs, primarily marijuana. This is according to the captain at the Weber county Sheriff’s Office. Most of the arrests took place on Sunday evening. At no time during this concert was it “out of control” of the Weber County Sheriff’s Department. No deputies were removed from service to police the concert. Red Rock Ranch required the promoter to pay off-duty deputies $4,500 for their services to work the concert. As for my future plans, again statements were made without accurate knowledge to support them. As of now, I have no plans for a future event of this kind, but I refuse to be intimidated into not considering such an event. This is a free country! Unfortunately, if something happens that does not comply with everyone’s ideas and narrow-minded desires the “we have kids here” card is immediately played. I also have children. The great fear is loud music will “rub-off “ on our children. What do you think they Inspirational Thought “Nobody can make you feel inferior without your permission.” —Eleanor Roosevelt |
