Show The Ogden Valley news Volume XX Issue XV Page 3 November 15, 2012 Letters to the Editor America is in Grave Danger with Obama in the White House Sadly, the Santa Claus President won a second term, primarily because there are more “takers” than “makers” who voted in our national election on November 6. Other important factors include cruel and mostly false negative advertisements orchestrated by the Obama campaign directed at painting an ugly, untrue picture of Mitt Romney. Here in the state of Utah, the super majority of voters are smart enough, and well informed enough to know that Mitt Romney is, in fact, a most admirable, first-class human being, as is his wife Ann. We are Lyle Bailey and Kent Hislop, and we were born and raised in this beautiful valley. We have always been very proud of the people who have grown up with us here, because the local residents of Huntsville, Eden, and Liberty have never been short on integrity, honesty, and the willingness to work. In the days following the election, the conservative news people across American on TV, radio, and in print, along with their conservative guests, have all agreed that it was no mistake to run Mitt Romney as our candidate on the right. Mitt Romney was, without question, the best man to rescue our country from the disastrous path it’s now on. We feel like most Utahans always do their homework, as we like to do, and tune in to all the various news sources, even if it’s only to see what the enemy camp is up to on one of the other channels we are not particularly partial to. On the right, which you could say is more favorable, but not exclusive to Republicans, is Fox News (Not channel 13, but the 24-hour cable news channel). The programs they have are all well known to be fair and balanced with views from the left as well as the right. The left-wing news media most assuredly wanted Barack Hussein Obama to remain in the white house. Take MSNBC, for example. If you watched Chris Mathews long enough after the election, you would have been shocked to hear him say, “Thank God for Hurricane Sandy.” The left-wing media never said one word about that comment, and yet they would have had their tongues dragging on the floor by now if Rush Limbaugh had made that same comment after a Romney win. Those were unbelievably cruel words said by Chris Mathews—MSNBC’s lead man—about a storm that still leaves millions of Americans suffering on the east coast. The left-wing media is in the tank for Obama, just like America’s labor unions are. Rather than consider what is best for our coun- try, it seems their only consideration is what is good for their own personal wallets. It’s like the economy doesn’t matter, the whispering to Russia’s leaders about a special deal after the election doesn’t matter, how this president botched the handling of Benghazi doesn’t matter, and another downgrade in America’s credit rating doesn’t matter. We could go on and on with things that should matter, like those we just mentioned, but liberals just don’t seem to care unless George W. Bush did it. The only thing that matters is the good old Barack Obama, every day, Santa Claus free stuff. Do these people even know what happened in the country of Greece when their Santa Claus bag was finally emptied? We are not big fans of the General Motors auto union, but the union that gives us the most concern is the teacher’s union, which we feel is promoting a left-wing, liberal agenda to our children. It is stunning looking at the high percentage of people under 30 years of age who voted for a guy who has destroyed America’s credit rating. These students, and recent graduates, have voted again for a guy who got a grade of F minus for his first four years in the White House. Here are some things that the teachers union failed to teach, and the main stream media failed to report. Had they told these truths, Mitt Romney would most assuredly be moving into the White House. Prior to George W. Bush, the national debt was six trillion dollars. To put that amount in perspective, a trillion dollars would be a million stacks of a million dollars. When the twin towers fell on 9/11/01, both sides of the aisle agreed there were WMD’s and both the left and the right concurred that we needed to react, which would, without a doubt, cost America some money to stand up for itself. At the time, America’s people overwhelmingly supported fighting back also. During George Bush’s eight years in office, the debt grew four trillion dollars higher, but the highest percentage of that debt was incurred in Bush’s last two years, which can be attributed to the Democrats winning control over both the house and the senate in November of 2006. By the way, prior to that midterm election when the Democrats took over, the unemployment rate was only 5.4%. Barack Hussein Obama added six more trillion dollars in half the time that Bush added only four trillion . . . with the help of the Democrats of the House and Senate. LETTERS Guest Commentary ThankendYou! and the joy, as well as the trials, for us will Gratitude is a universal sentiment known to people of every nation on earth and has been throughout history. An old Estonian proverb admonishes, “Who does not thank for a little, will not thank for much.” This seems to suggest that we should be in the habit of giving thanks, even for small blessings. Another bit of advice from George Canning, 19th century British statesman, warns us, “When our peril is past will our gratitude sleep?” And, philosopher and statesman Cicero advises, “Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but it is the parent of all others.” Early American colonists were very aware of the need to be thankful and began a tradition that today is referred to as Thanksgiving Day. They were grateful for a successful colony, for their neighbors—some of whom were Indians, their crops, and family. Their actions seem to have followed the advice of an unknown author who said, “Hem your blessings with thankfulness so they won’t unravel.” Will Thanksgiving of 2012 find us grateful for our many blessings? This year has been a difficult one for many Americans due to a poor economy; high unemployment; soaring inflation; natural disasters such as drought, wildfires, tornados, hurricanes, and flooding; and the results of a restless, violent world. We may feel challenged to find reasons to give thanks this year. Yet, isn’t being thankful for what you have an important step in recovering from difficulties or disaster and pressing on? No matter what your belief is of the afterlife, the fact is that mortal life as we know it will be over. This seems all the more reason to be grateful for our blessings. Perhaps the “Bard of Avon,” William Shakespeare, said it best, “O Lord that lends me life, lend me a heart replete with thankfulness.” This quote recognizes the source of our existence as well as the temporary nature of life on earth. When we feel thankful, it comes from the heart not the mind and happens when we know that something really touches us. This creates a feeling of gratitude and well-being essential for a peaceful life. We start the process by saying thank you to those who have helped us and to a Creator who blesses us. This coming holiday week, many of us will participate in the traditions of family gatherings—a wonderful dinner with turkey and all the trimmings, and time with those we love; giving thanks will also be a usual part of the festivities for many. There will be trips to grandma’s house, children dressed up and on their best behavior (or not), and friendly greetings and warm hugs. There will also be a time for shopping the early holiday sales, endless football games, and traditional parades. For many people on the East coast, this will be a time of recovery and of hardship after a devastating storm. If you’re seeking inspiration to give thanks, consider the words of someone who has had a troubled life, Willie Nelson. He said, “When I started counting my blessings, my whole life turned around.” Whatever your holiday brings, give thanks. John W.
