Show Page 4 The Ogden Valley news Volume XX Issue XIII August 1, 2012 Sons of Utah Pioneers Plan Visit to Fort Buenaventura OVBA Solicits Nominations for 2013 Board of Directors Election The Ogden the nomadic ways of the Indian tribes and trapValley Chapter of the Sons of Utah Pioneers has scheduled a tour of Fort Buenaventura for August 16 at 7:00 p.m. The park hosts will give a tour and explain the history of the fort, and a mountain man will accompany the group during the event. There is a $2-per-person fee for entrance into the park, which is located at 2450 A Avenue in Ogden. For those who want to attend dinner prior to the tour, we will meet at 5:30 at the Golden Coral, 988 Washington Blvd. This activity is open to the public. Located on an 84-acre river tract of land near the Weber River, the fort symbolizes a period of western history that was a time of transition from pers to the first permanent settlers in the Great Basin. Today, facilities at the fort include picnic areas, a canoeing pond, restrooms, and a replica fort that includes three cabins. Fort Buenaventura was constructed on the original site of the fort that was built in 1845 by Miles Goodyear and his wife. It has been reconstructed according to archaeological and historical research. The recreated fort’s dimensions, height of pickets, method of construction, and number and styles of log cabins are all based on documented facts. There are no nails in the stockade; instead, historic wooden pegs and mortis and tension joints hold the wall together.
