Show Volume I , Issue X Page 3 The Ogden Valley News July 1999 POST OFFICE cont. from page 1 township. Many at the meeting oppose the selection as outside of Huntsville, thus removing the “heart” from old downtown. There was strong feelings at the meeting from the Mayor against moving the office outside of town. The meeting concluded with the agreement that an “inner Huntsville location” at Woods Market corner will be rebid by the Sorensens within two months, and that a final contract won’t be awarded until the end of August. The Post Office issue raises the question, When are private issues best laid before the public for open review? How far should decisions by public officials go before review before the community? I’m not saying that this decision was made without public awareness, but land owners and developers must often move toward a plan alone with ideas tightly guarded. The U.S. Forest Service/ Snowbasin land swap moved slowly and quietly for years, and still moves. Is money best made that way? Land owners and developers often work with their ideas in creative fashion, making infinite modifications, the final product can be a product of highly complex decisions. The public review process can demolish within seconds, many hard worked out and costly details. The commercial center of Huntsville is slowly developing around highway 39 with the South Fork Village setting the stage for more to come. Is this the Plan? Growth brings growing pains. The Hunstville Master Plan has yet to be approved or revealed to the public, but new commercial developments are moving ahead. One such development is the current annexation of commercial property into Huntsville for a new 80,000 square foot retail office/restaurant complex on South Fork River, with construction, possibly, to begin this year. Does the Huntsville Master Plan take this into account? Is there going to be a limit to annexation in the future? Are specifics like this in the plan? Even though the public isn’t invested in the risk of a project, they usually have productive input, and their ideas can help the developer move into new ways of shaping the Valley—creative suggestions that can aid the “movers and the shakers” of the Valley of the 21st century. More visibility and disclosure of planning and development in the Huntsville area is necessary, as it is anywhere. There is conflict between the people who make the changes and those of us who follow. The concept of democracy is an ideal which only works when the public is well informed, whether it be in relation to development, politics, economics, or legal issues, and when the public has the time and energy to analyze, in depth and detail, decisions made by our leaders and policy makers. Neither of these conditions exist today in the USA. Look at history to see the disenfranchised who ultimately radicalize and revolt against the power hungry. Sometimes a community must begin to see outside of their local needs and look at the bigger picture. To all those who are taking on this heavy responsibility now, the way the Valley looks in 20 years will be the result of your wise or short-sighted planning. The freedom to create was given to each of us by a supreme power. We exercise this privilege, primarily, in a capitalistic system based on a rate of return. The strength of our capitalistic culture has never been in seeing the long term communal effects of development, therefore all should tread carefully, with longer term values in mind. Hummingbirds and Your Hummingbird Feeders By Katey Heward Everybody around here loves hummingbirds. These little birds are quite extraordinary. That is why we need to make sure that they are taken care of. Some people say that red dye or food coloring attracts hummingbirds, but they don’t understand that this can be harmful, and even fatal to them. Companies that produce products and feeding solutions for your hummingbird feeders might be harming the birds more than they are helping. Most companies use propylene glycol in their mixes. It is a refined alcohol that is sometimes used as antifreeze. It causes the hummingbird’s tongue to grow a fungus that can be fatal. Besides, with that much red already on the feeders, why would they need more in the food? Hummingbirds don’t look at the nectar anyway, they look for the flowers with the right shape and color. Bee pollen is not recommended for a substitute in the feeders. Never use honey to replace sugar. When ingested, the birds produce babies that are blind, deformed, or have shells that won’t open. This can also cause the growth of a fungus. Hummingbirds have very sensitive mouths and throats. When a reactant is introduced, like honey, the throat swells up and cuts off the birds’ oxygen. You can make your own nectar substitute by boiling one (1) part granulated sugar in four (4) parts water. Be sure to let it cool. It is best to place your bird feeders at least 30 feet apart and, better yet, around a corner from each other. Males defend territory and it’s the best way to prevent confrontation. Two ways to avoid harmful bird mixes; never buy nectar for hummingbirds if it has red dye in it, and don’t buy scented products. This is unlikely to have any affect on how many hummingbirds you attract because hummingbirds, like most birds, have no sense of smell.
