From build-a-pets and homemade salt dough kits to wands and tie-dye socks, we had some fantastic shops open. This year’s application round is now open! To apply, visit childrensbizfair.com. There is no entry fee. The event will be held at Eden Park Bowery May 13 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Please come by and shop and support our local children entrepreneurs! Kids, ages 5 to 16, create a product or service, develop a brand, build a marketing strategy, and then open for customers at this one-day marketplace. The children are responsible for the setup, sales, and interaction with customers. This event is free and open to the public! Above is Reese Hilton who opened The Soap Shop. She made her own logo and printed it on her t-shirt. She made organic goats milk soap and sold out of her product at the fair last year. Snowcrest Skyhawks of the Month “Hard Workers” On Being an Idealist By Shanna Francis Truth seekers and idealists often have a pained life, as the world is host to far too many inhabitants who neither value truth nor ideals. This was the case for Albert Schweitzer— idealist, physician, healer, visionary, philosopher, humanitarian, musician, builder, and administrator and supporter of the sick, forgotten, and lost. His daughter Rhena Schweitzer wrote of him that he was a man surrounded by controversy. “He developed and lived for ideas on many fields which were revolutionary and much misunderstood in his time. Until the end of his life he fought for better understanding between all men and peace on this earth. This was of course a utopian struggle and one in which he could not succeed, though he managed to make of his hospital in Lambaréné [Gabon] a kind of island of peace in which people of different nationalities, races and backgrounds could live in harmony with each other and with nature. At his death, he was almost universally mourned.” Some of the things Schweitzer tried to help others understand: the interconnectedness of all living things and reverence for all life. Of him, George Marshall wrote, “If you have suffered some shocking sorrow, a totally unjustified personal grief, you are in the circle of Schweitzer, who having suffered confinement as a prisoner of war, returned to bury his mother after she was trampled to death by German cavalry in World War I. If you have been a prisoner of war, a political refugee, a displaced person, you are in the company of one who was interned by the French. And if you have wandered in that dark kingdom of mental depression groping praying, pleading for recovery and release, you will find a closeness to Schweitzer, who struggled for not months but years to regain his balance and perspective, indeed, to truly live again.” While being an idealist can be a heavy journey, it is also the most rewarding, as being and doing your best, and helping others do likewise, is the Way. It is how asked, even expected us to live. While it may not be idyllic, it is the ideal.
