Show THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 4 Volume V, Issue VIII February 1, 2002 Skiing at Snowbasin During the Games—Frequently asked questions Please use these answers as a guide and note that some details may change as the Games approach. Will Snowbasin be open to the public for skiing and snowboarding during the Games? Yes, Snowbasin will be a great place to ski and snowboard during the games. Snowbasin is the only Olympic Venue where you don’t need an Olympic ticket to stand alongside the course to watch the competition. You do, however, need to park in a designated lot, purchase a Snowbasin lift ticket, pass through a security checkpoint, and ride a secure shuttle bus 20 minutes to Snowbasin. Snow conditions will be at their mid-winter best, and you’ll have a great chance to see Olympic competitors up close! There are great spots in Porcupine Bowl overlooking much of the Wildflower Downhill and parts of the Grizzly Downhill. The Midbowl Express Gondola will be open to the public, providing a great view of the racecourses, the finish lines and the stadium. Olympic teams will be testing equipment and wax daily in Coyote Bowl, under the Strawberry Gondola. Will Snowbasin lift ticket prices be increased during the Games? No. Our daily lift ticket prices won’t change for the Olympics. Season passes and Discount Cards will be honored during the entire season, including during the Games. Half-day lift tickets will not be available from February 4 until February 21. What lifts will be open to the public during the Games? Seven of Snowbasin’s nine lifts will be open for public skiers and boarders. Only the John Paul Express and Olympic Tram will be reserved exclusively for Olympic participants. Be sure to bring your camera because the Midbowl Express Gondola provides a spectacular view of the Grizzly Downhill’s ultra-steep Rendezvous Face and finish line. The Midbowl Express Gondola also crosses directly over the Wildflower Downhill—twice! The Midbowl Express Gondola will be open to uphill and downhill foot passengers with a valid lift ticket. What slopes will be open during the Games? Fifty of Snowbasin’s 53 named runs will be open for skiing during the Olympic Games. Only the John Paul and No Name areas will be closed to the public, plus a small portion of Coyote Bowl under the Strawberry Gondola. Olympic Teams will use this part of Coyote Bowl to test equipment and wax. Please give Olympians priority at the Strawberry Gondola. How much of the Olympic Downhill courses can Snowbasin skiers see? The Snowbasin retail and rental shops on the Plaza will be open for Day Skiers throughout the Games. The Snowbasin ski school will be open for private and class lessons. Won’t Snowbasin’s plaza and lodges be overcrowded with 25,000 spectators? No. Security officials have decided to keep Olympic ticket holders segregat- ed from public skiers and snowboarders. There will be plenty of room to enjoy Snowbasin’s sunny heated decks, sumptuous log-and-rock lodges, aweinspiring views and gourmet food because the 25,000 Olympic ticket holders will be kept 75 yards away inside the fenced stadium area. Will I have to go through a security checkpoint to ski at Snowbasin during the Games? Yes, the security check (magnetometer, equipment check and bag check) will be required from February 4th until February 21st. Because Snowbasin’s skiers and boarders will be so close to the Downhill courses, all will be required to pass through a security checkpoint similar to what you find at the airport. Day Skiers can pass through the security checkpoint from 8:00 am until 2:30 pm. SLOC secure shuttle busses will operate from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm. The security checkpoint is about 8 miles from Snowbasin in Mountain Green on Old Highway Road approximately three tenths of a mile East of the Old Farm Sinclair station and 2.7 miles West of the Peterson exit on Interstate 84 (Exit 96). What items can I bring with me through the security checkpoint when I ski at Snowbasin? Bring only what you need to ski and watch Olympic races and training runs. (The training run days offer the best chance to observe and interact with the athletes.) For a complete list of restricted and prohibited items, please go to www.saltlake2002.com, click on Spectator Info, then Spectator FAQ. The only exception to these guidelines is that Snowbasin Day Skiers will be allowed to bring ski and snowboard equipment, and one small daypack for carrying a camera, binoculars, cowbell or extra clothing. I bought lift tickets for the Mens Downhill on February 10, but if it snows 18 inches on the evening of the 9, the Men’s Downhill will probably be postponed to the next day. Do I need another lift ticket if I want to ski up to the Downhill Course on the 11? Yes, you need a lift ticket for each day you want to ski. Lift Tickets and Parking Permits are not transferable from one day to another. Heavy snowfall, high wind or poor visibility can result in a race postponement of hours or even days. Unlike the stadium spectators, you will be able to go powder skiing if new snow delays the start of the race for several hours.
