From this fast-paced opening sequence, Power expands his focus to include perspectives and experiences of men and women who have been caught in avalanches, the research and development of avalanche forecasting and equipment, the role of avalanche dogs, the effects of climate change on winter sports, and so much more.” Edward and his wife Marguerite moved to Trappers Ridge in 2004. Oh My! 3:45 p.m., 922 eyes—new lodges, new lifts, beautiful runs! At the time we were living in Virginia Beach, Virginia where I was working in media, running a media company, after spending many years as a newspaper reporter and editor. I then became a publisher in 1999. So over the years we traveled out here many times to ski in the winter, and to hike and enjoy the summers. Over time, Marguerite and I decided that someday we would retire here. When our boys grew up and moved away, and we could see they were not coming back to Virginia Beach, Marguerite retired from her job as head of the upper school English department at a private school, and in December 2015, I finished up my ‘formal’ media career. The next month, January 2016, we boarded a plane, flew here, bought season ski passes for the first time—and skied more than we ever imagined for three months. And we’ve been here ever since! “Part of my personal plan was to go back to my original love of writing, and after a year here, I took an avalanche awareness course, met Craig Gordon, and decided there might be a book in the subject of avalanches, the forecasters, the snow professionals W. 12th St., Ogden. But once I had a chance to try skiing in my early teens I was hooked. But it wasn’t until I moved here that I really got to dive into my skiing and I feel like I’ve come a long way in the past 4½ years. Unfortunately, my sons live on the East Coast, in New Jersey and Maine. But if we can soon get the airlines operating again with many flights, Marguerite and I will be able to begin visiting them and our two grandchildren in Maine. “Living here in the valley has exceeded our hopes. We have met people who have become some of our best friends in our lifetimes. We marvel every morning at how beautiful the valley is. And as aging athletes—but still athletes!—we love all the activities here—skiing, hiking, going out on Pineview… me on a paddle board and Marguerite in her kayak.” To learn more about the author and his book, visit <edwardpowerwriter.com> New Trails Open in North Fork Park Note: This information was provided courtesy of Northern Utah Trails (formerly Weber Pathways) Are you looking for a new hiking or equestrian trail in the Ogden Valley area? Well, don’t we have the trail for you! Park View & Scrub Oak Trails at North Fork Park offer nice views of the surrounding area and surprising shaded singletrack. The only catch is that trail is rough and definitely not MTB friendly, but nevertheless well defined. The full loop is rated as an intermediate for hikers. Directions - First, park at Cutlers Flat and hike up North River Trail. (1.5 miles) <https://goo.gl/maps/99jT2bipSc1SHVpi9> Next, look on your right for the wooden posts marking the start and end of the trails. Linking into Park View and Scrub Oak trails will add around 2.5 miles. With the recent completion of Cutlers Twist, you might be curious to know what the TFNU trail crew is up to. Most recently, they have been working to retread lowerbicentennial trail at North Fork Park. If you have been on the trail in the last few years, we’re sure you’re familiar with the large rut that has been forming near the bottom due to water run-off. In order to combat this, the crew is rerouting this section to help create a more sustainable trail. Until the reroute has time to settle and compact, equestrians users are being kindly asked to avoid the reroute and stay on the original trail. The high pounds-per-square-inch of horse hooves will leave holes in the fresh dirt and create hazards for other trail users. |
