The Ogden Valley Library closes at 6:00 p.m. on Friday nights so there was a change in location. Dr. Gene A Sessions, Presidential Distinguished Professor of History at Weber State University will be the featured speaker. He has recently revised the first edition of his biography of Jedediah Morgan Grant, which was published in 1982. The second edition has been updated and contains many more photographs. Professor Sessions will present a vivid description of Jedidiah M. Grant and his life in the Utah Territories in the 1840s and 1850s. A second counselor to Brigham Young, President Grant was a man who knew no compromise when it came to principles. His words to the members summoned them to sacrifice and work hard to conquer the wilderness. This was the time when “every individual teetered between salvation and damnation, and in which unsanitary privies and a stray cow held the same potential for eternal doom as blasphemy or adultery.” Jedediah Morgan Grant’s voice rises powerfully in his biography. Anderson, TV Board Member For three months, we have been broadcasting digital television (DVT) from our Ogden Valley TV Translator Station. We have also continued broadcasting the analog channels. There still seems to be much confusion about the switchover from analog TV to digital (DTVV). The U.S. Congress has moved the date to convert to digital back to June 12, 2009 on the premise that several million people in the nation are not yet prepared for the change over. The broadcast TV stations are telling us there are three ways we can receive DTV. One way is to buy a new TV set with a digital tuner built in and then hook it up directly to your roof-top antenna. Another way is to buy a converter box to hookup between your old TV set and the roof-top antenna. The third way is to subscribe to a satellite service. If you are one of the folks not yet prepared, there still might be a chance to get a government coupon. However, I understand there is a huge backlog of requests for the government coupons. You may try to get one by going online to http://wwwdtv2009.gov or by calling 1-888-388-2009. It is recommended that you use a UHF antenna and that you periodically re-program your converter box remote control. There have been some questions as to why channel 13, FOX, has not been converted to DTV yet. We had to obtain additional equipment to install on Mt. Ogden and we didn’t get it in time to install before the snow came. We will convert channel 13 as soon as the snow goes away and we are able to get to the Mt. Ogden site. For your information, the following DTV channels are listed below. 2.1 4.1 4.2 5.1 5.2 5.3 7.1 KUTV, CBS, Salt Lake City KTVX, ABC, Salt Lake City Additional service KTVX KSL, NBC, Salt Lake City Additional service KSL KSL weather station KUED, PBS, University of Utah DIGITAL TV cont. on page 6 Ogden Valley Parks Receive Funds area-code region to dial their party’s full 10-digit number (area code + 7-digit phone number), or their call will not go through. AT&T states that this change is necessitated by a growing demand for new telephone numbers; thus, the 385 area code is being added to the 801 region. Since two area codes will serve the same geographic region, the area code must by used when dialing all telephone numbers, including numbers using the same code. bers or service may be assigned numbers with the new 385 area code. AT&T is suggesting that customers mitigate possible inconveniences by updating 7-digit phone numbers already programmed into communication devices and on personal identification materials such as: AREA CODE cont. on page 2 Sixth Grade Teachers Honored at Utah Jazz Game By Melissa Lewis showcase great accomplishments happening in our public schools. Nancy Lindeman, supported by Amanda Scheuermann, was the impetus behind the new charter school initiative. “The idea to pursue a charter school in the northern Weber County area began after the voucher initiative failed last year,” stated Lindeman. “We then decided to look into a charter-based school and pursue this option, based on the premise that there needs to be choice in education.” Both Nancy and Amanda have an education background, and are trained in the Representative Gage Froerer (center) recently presented checks to Eden Park Chairman David Montessori education philosophy that is Ferguson and Liberty Park Chairman Ross Mertlich. Lindeman states, “This will be the first nationally accredited Montessori charter school in the state of Utah. We are really excited to offer this program to parents because an education of this caliber is often limited to private education, which may be cost prohibitive, especially for parents who have larger families,” The new charter school is scheduled to open for the school year in the fall of 2010, and will be built in the North Ogden area. The school will provide for the education of 450 students in kindergarten through 8th grade. Class size will be limited to 25 students. Each class will have one trained and certified Montessori teacher and one trained Montessori assistant. All teachers will also be state certified. CHARTER SCHOOL cont. on page 13 |
