Show Volume V, Issue IV THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 11 December 1, 2001 Jazz News By Jen Beasley Student Reporter The Utah Jazz started off the season slow, but it seems that they may finally be finding their foothold. And it’s little surprise—there’s nothing like an irate Jerry Sloan to doctor the attitudes of an ailing basketball team. After the 111-79 waxing Utah received from the Hawks, the Jazz were 3-6 and Jerry Sloan’s usual sunshiney disposition was “missing in action.” When asked why the Jazz had such a rough time of it, the Coach minced no words. “They quit. I never had a team walk out while on the floor in my life. You’ll have to ask them why.” He also sent a message to Karl Malone, who’s numbers had been mysteriously crippled early on. “NBA players who have been around a long time start playing games with you. I thought we had some of that going on.” His statements to the press, along with whatever went on in the locker room and practices the following day, really did the trick. The Jazz bounced back to gain a 101-92 win over Washington in their first meeting with Michael Jordan since his rereturn. Donyell Marshall and Karl Malone both scored season highs with 28 and 30 points respectively, and Quincy Lewis contributed with a career high 18 points. John Stockton pitched in 17 assists. That night, Coach Sloan’s comments were much more positive. “It seems that Garden & Landscape Design we had guys trying to do the right thing. That’s how you get better. That’s how you got to play through the tough times.” The improvement has continued. The Jazz have sharper execution, better defense, and are turning the ball over significantly less than in the games prior to the 32 point smashing—and their record is beginning to show it. According to Donyell Marshall, the reason is obvious. “I don’t think we panicked,” he said of the Jazz after beating Washington. “In the past couple of games, we panicked.” Questions? Comments?
