Show THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 6 Volume V, Issue IV December 1, 2001 Light Up the Canyon . . . By Lorine Murtagh Ogden Canyon Club I am so excited about the upcoming holiday season—Christmas, welcoming in the New Year, and showing off our beautiful canyon to our 2002 Olympic visitors from our own homeland and others from around the world. This is what I want my fellow canyon dwellers to do. When you string up your outside lights this year in preparation for the upcoming holiday season, make plans to leave them up throughout the month of February in a “light up the canyon” display for the enjoyment of all to see. Lights speak their own language of “welcome,” and also send a message that says “look, see, and enjoy.” The festive energy in the canyon during the holidays comes from the multi-colored lights twinkling through the bare trees, and reflecting off the slow moving water of the Ogden River. It also comes from our canyon neighbors who give us a glimpse of their decorated trees and displays as we traverse the winding roadway. For me, treasured seasonal melodies come to mind at the sight of lights—my favorite being “ . . . strings of streetlights, even stoplights, blink a bright red and green, as the shoppers rush home with their treasures . . . ” Another that comes to mind— “Christmas is here, mistletoe and laughter; carols and bells ringing to the rafters. Lights on the tree, candles all aglow, and all who pass by say, ‘Hello.’” See how catching it is. Did you catch yourself humming or singing along with me? Also, do you know about the Flag Program? What a great way to “salute” your individual heritage! I will be flying, not only the American flag, but also the Norwegian flag during the Olympic games in honor of my ancestors from Norway. Mayor Godfrey and members of the Ogden City Council have each adopted a country, and will fly the flag of those countries during the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Businesses and residents in our community can display flags of the countries they choose to “adopt” during the Olympics, or of a country with which they have a special connection. Flags are available for a limited time for only $9.99 from Planet Rainbow at Rainbow Gardens (3923902), or the gift shop at Union Station (629-8533). Make this a special “light up the canyon” holiday season, and Winter Olympics. The Ogden Canyon Club wishes you the happiest of holidays and Olympic experience.
