Show Page 16 The OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Volume II, Issue IV January 2000 SportsNews Warriors Have the Hearts of Champions By Malinda Lanier This was an exciting season for the Weber High School football team. However, it was a hard and long fight to become the State’s 4-A champions, and the team accomplished this with their hearts, determination and sheer willpower. These young men have worked together as a team for three years. The summer conditioning and practices left them little time for family vacations or fun. They gave it all up for the opportunity to represent their school in football. They endured heat, dehydration, and even throwing up during rigorous practices. All of this aided in developing a sense of unity, and also their determination. The coaching staff also made many of these same sacrifices. They gave so much of their free time to football that often they had to place family and friends on hold for the season. The season begins in early June and ends with the final game in November. Coaches spent every weekend reviewing game films and planning their strategy for the next game. At practice, they focused on helping each boy find their strengths, and then to apply these strengths to benefit the team. They taught these boys to be good sportsmen and to have self-respect above all else. In a parent meeting at the beginning of the season, Coach Bosgieter stated, “There is no ‘I’ or ‘you’ in Weber. It is ‘We’ ber and ‘we’ are a team.” These boys, destined to become men, were a team. The coaching staff emphasized that students come first in the term student athlete. Thus, the student athletes were required to maintain their schoolwork along with enduring the grueling and exhausting practices. They succeeded in becoming a team that was unstoppable, regardless of their physical size or talent. It was their heart and soul that propelled them on to victory. Watching these boys become men seemed to happen almost over night. It seemed that they became men with the first playoff game at West High School. They were doing their warm up drills, their voices were echoing off the buildings, and the voices I heard were of men not boys. This ominous sound echoed with strength and power from within their souls. However, during this game they lost a comrade. While I observed silently the hearts and emotions of these young men as they finished this conquest as winners, I saw that these boys were true warriors in spirit and might. Our warriors never gave in as a team. Coach Hansen stated he had never coached a team that was so cohesive as this team had been. To watch them, they were a team no matter what position they played or how often they were able to get out on the field in a game. There were no individual heroes. They played as a single unit. They rejoiced and prayed as one. They were a team with heart and determination. The state championship game proved it. We should remember these young men, not by the community in which they live, but as a team. I am proud of every effort and accomplishment that the Weber High football team made throughout the past three years—for my son was one of these outstanding young men. I hope that their courage, determination, and heart will be an example for future Warriors, and that these characteristics will continue with them throughout their lives. 4A-Championship Team Roster: Michael Bailey Mark Miller Colby Fuller *Shad Owens Dennis Conroy Jason Call Josh Barrett *Ryan Toponce Greg Gerritsen *Jon Graves Ben Miller Adam Garcia Clint Olsen Ryan Sprinkle Ty Sparrow *Taylor Oberg Jeremy Coleman Jed Hoskins Brady Hess *Justin Kinsford Ashton Buswell Jeffrey Broadbent Jason West Benjamin Henry Darin Scott Brandon Nanney Ryan Means *Erik Gill Rafe Maughan *Tyler Perry Stephen Southwick Eric Sandberg Mark Bailey Jacob Petersen Tyson Kunz Trever Hadley Jared Christensen Trevor Jackson Ryan Munson Kevin Mead Kevin McGannon J.
