Show Page 16 The OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Volume II, Issue II November 1999 Sports News Commitment To The Team And To Our Youth What an exciting year this has been for our young men who played football. Practicing four days a week took a lot of commitment and discipline, not to mention the things they sacrificed to make sure they were there every night, but it paid off. All three teams (Midget, Pee Wee and Jr. Mites) had a fantastic year! A special thanks should be given to all the great coaching staff for their dedication and time they unselfishly gave to help these teams learn and grow. The change in all the young men was both on and off the field. They have learned that it truly takes each and every man doing his part to make the team score, sacrificing to keep a commitment to a team, as well as making some lifelong friends. These fine young men have shown us that the spirit of youth still remains in our Valley today and that there is always hope for the future. A huge thanks to Serio Brothers Construction and Wadman Corporation for their financial help that allowed the teams to have some new equipment, trophies for each young man and also personalized jerseys. This energized the teams and boosted their confidence! Thanks to Eden Park! Our new playing field for our home games and most of all, to the moms and dads that helped make things run so smooth. We appreciate you! Watch for sign-ups next July 2000 or contact Vern Hart at 745-6869 or any of the super coaches we have. Cycling Fund Raiser Big Success By Shanna Francis On September 25, 337 cyclists took to the streets in Ogden Valley for the first annual Ride For Life fund-raiser. The ride was organized by CADD– Cyclists Against Drunk Drivers–an organization created to raise funds to benefit cyclists injured by drunk drivers. The benefit ride was planned to specifically raise funds for three cyclists–Brain Carlson, Brookanne Mickelson and Maikel Wise–who were seriously injured this summer in Davis County when a drunk driver ploughed into a group they were riding with while training for an upcoming event. The Valley event was an overwhelming success with many unanticipated registrants showing up the morning of the ride. Riders of all ages participated in one of four routes offered; all of them beginning at the new bowery in Eden Park at about 9:00 a.m. There was a long distance ride covering over 100 miles that included a trip over Trapper’s Loop, a tour around Morgan, and a return trip over Trapper’s Loop before returning to Eden. Also a 66-mile, a 30-mile, and an 8-mile ride. The routes took riders along River Drive in Eden, all the way around Pineview Reservoir, and up to the Monastery in Huntsville. The Weber/Morgan Health Department and the American Red Cross provided services at rest stops along the way. In a drawing before the ride began, numerous prizes were given away. Items were generously donated by a number of bicycle shops in the Ogden area. Moderate temperatures, blue skies, and breathtaking autumn foliage made for a spectacular ride. Many first time cyclists to the area commented enthusiastically on the near perfect conditions and picture perfect scenery. A Committee of eight organized the activity, led by Larry Carr and Fran Bush. Over $10,000 was collected from the event. There were contributors who were unable to participate in the ride but, nevertheless, made the drive to the Valley to drop by a donation, and enjoy the seasonal fall leaves. The support was overwhelming. Later on, riders returned to the bowery with voracious appetites, and were treated to a delicious and filling lunch before breaking up for the afternoon. Sponsors of the ride are planning to make this an annual event. Thank you to all who made this activity a success. Thank You To Softball Harold Scilley assistant coach, thank you for helping out.
