He spoke at the Eden 1st Ward on January 20. Elder Aaron B. Stitt, son of Roger and Leslie Stitt of Huntsville, will serve in the Pennsylvania Pittsburgh Mission. He spoke at the Middleton Ward, in Huntsville, January 13. Elder Joshua David Loud, son of Mike and Stephanie Loud of Liberty, will serve in the Germany Munich Mission. He spoke at the Liberty 3rd Ward on January 27. Joshua is a graduate of Weber High School and Weber High LDS Seminary. Elder Blake W. Bott, son of Lamar and Marcie Bott of Eden, grandson of Brad and LuAnne Skinner of Eden, will serve in the Canada Calgary Mission. He will speak February 3, 2002 at the Eden 1st Ward at 12:40 p.m. He will enter the Missionary Training Center on Feb. 13. Birthdays Weddings Berrett Haslam-Burton Doris Hill Berrett of North Ogden celebrated her 80th birthday. She was honored by her family. Born January 9, 1922, in Liberty, to William and Florence Shaw Hill, she attended Liberty Elementary School, Huntsville Junior High School and Weber High School. A member of the Pep Club and the band, she had a role in the school opera. She was the principal speaker at her Seminary graduation. She sang with her sister at many civic and LDS Church activities. She wed Wilbur H. Berrett of North Ogden, October 16, 1940, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Her children are Dennis Berrett, Midvale; Diane Berrett Ellison, Centerville; Steven Berrett, Kaysville; and Barbara Berrett, Salt Lake City. An active member of the LDS Church , she served in many capacities. A member of the Ogden Auxiliary Kiwanis organization, she served as president. Her interests include reading, gardening, raising strawberries, and being a member and president of the North Ogden Literary Club. She has traveled all over the world with her husband. She has 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Angie Haslam and Zach Burton were married Wednesday, January 16, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Following the ceremony, the bridegroom’s parents hosted a wedding luncheon at the Ogden Golf & Country Club. The couple was honored that evening with a reception at the Weber State University Alumni Center. She is the daughter of Craig and Susan Haslam of Ogden. He is the son of Robert and Colleen Burton of Huntsville. Bridesmaids were Jen Mertlich, Allison Haslam, Kelli Burton, Jessica Burton, and Randi Burton. She attends WSU, majoring in elementary education. She is employed with Living Scriptures, Inc. He is a graduate of Weber High School. He served in the California San Bernardino LDS Spanish-speaking Mission. He attends WSU, majoring in technical sales. He will graduate this spring. He also is employed with Living Scriptures, Inc. After a honeymoon to Maui, Hawaii, the couple will reside in Huntsville. Obituaries Vera S. Applonie OGDEN — Vera S. Applonie, 94, died Friday, January 11, 2002 at a local care center. She was born May 3, 1907 in Liberty, a daughter of James Edmund and Virtue Pearl Chard Shaw. She attended Ogden Valley Schools, Ogden High School from 1926-27, and graduated in 1927 with the first graduating class of Weber High School. She graduated from Weber College lower campus in 1929 and from the University of Utah with a bachelor”s degree in 1964. She also attended Utah State Agricultural College and Brigham Young University. On May 30, 1954, Vera married Arthur Louis Applonie in Ogden. Their marriage was solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple on July 23, 1956. Arthur preceded her in death on March 1, 1979. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Ogden 28th Ward where she served in all the auxiliaries. She was a member of the Relief Society Singing Mothers and a temple worker. Vera taught in the Weber County School District for 42 years, retiring in 1971. She was also in charge of the Wilson School Library for 16 years. At Stanford University in 1948, she received an outstanding teacher award for summer school from General Mills. She served as vice president of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international honor society for women, and was a board member of the American Association for University Women. A secretary for the Association of Childhood Education International, she also served as a delegate for the ACEI national convention in Seattle in 1949. She was a member of WEA, UEA, NEA, and Camp Ensign of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, where she also served as Captain. Vera”s hobbies included quilting, reading and temple work. Surviving are two sisters and one brother, Mary Jane Johns, and Amelia Smith, both of Ogden; Rulon C. Shaw, Thatcher, Idaho. Vera was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, Lawrence E. Shaw and Woodrow K. Shaw; and three sisters, Mildred Boyle, Tura Southwick, and Alburdice Lindsay. Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 15 at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary. Interment, Liberty Cemetery. The family expresses special thanks to Hospice and Crestwood Care Center.
